Why is everybody mad at Gwyneth Paltrow?

(Check out how many black friends I have!)

I’m not really a big fan of actress Gwyneth Paltrow.  I’m mostly ambivalent and neither like her nor hate her,  like a lot of other people.  She’s mainly insignificant to me unless her website Goop is recommending a cleanse that improves my health or she’s singing with Cee Lo on the top of a piano.  Gwyneth just doesn’t get me riled up.

Over the weekend though Gwyneth got herself in trouble when she attended Jay Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne tour in Paris.  Unless you live under a rock you are aware that the hip hop superstars have a song on their album titled, “Ni**as in Paris” which is one ...

Youth dating violence impacting even younger teens

Over a decade ago we learned it was young people (age 16-24) that endured the highest rates of dating violence which catapulted a variety of programs in an effort to decrease the disastrous rates with which young people were experiencing intimate partner violence. Ten years later it appears little has changed. The Center for Disease Control found that today 1 in 10 teenagers still experience dating violence. And some research suggests that teens as young as 11 and 12 have experienced dating violence.

According to the New York Times, this new data has caused many intervention programs to target even younger youth–educating those as young as 11 about the impacts of teen dating violence.

Esta Soler, president of Futures Without Violence, a ...

Big Recall Election in Wisconsin Today!

Today is the day. A year ago thousands of protestors in Wisconsin took to the streets to protest against Republican Governor Scott Walker’s union busting legislation and through organizing and hard work Democrats have forced a recall election. Running against the Republican governor is the Mayor of Milwaukee Democrat Tom Barrett and firefighter Mahlon Mitchell who is running for the spot as Lieutenant Governor. There are also three other races where Wisconsin Republican state senators try to hold on to their seats.

The polling shows that the race is neck and neck. Translation: It’s all about getting out the vote in Wisconsin. If you have a moment to spare and a cell phone click here to volunteer ...

What We Missed

Just when you thought CeCe McDonald’s case couldn’t become more wrought with injustice: she’s being incarcerated in a male prison.

A gay HIV-positive man is suing a New Jersey hospital for denying him lifesaving treatment and visitation “for going against God’s will.”

Thousands of women (and men) in Turkey protested yesterday in response to government plans to curb abortion rights.

Urban Outfitters seems to be touting its own line of Romney campaign gear.

Urge your senators to vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act!

Tomorrow, the Senate is set to vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act (PFA), which would update, strengthen and close the loopholes of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which made it illegal for employers to pay men and women unequal wages for the same work. As our own Zerlina reports, the PFA “would prohibit employer retaliation, allow workers to join class action lawsuits, as well  as ensure that the victims received back pay from discriminatory employers.  For some women the difference in pay for a man that does the same job can add up to $24,000 dollars a year in lost wages and nearly $431,000 over the course of a lifetime.”

Of course, Republicans are expected to vote against the radical, ...

Over 300 Mormons march in Utah Gay Pride Parade

It’s so refreshing when religious people actually ask themselves What Would Jesus Do. I’m no theologian, but I’m pretty sure he would walk with and not rally against people celebrating people’s right to be and love as they choose. So, I was thrilled to see that over 300 members of the Church of Latter Day Saints attended the Utah Gay Pride Parade on Sunday.

The group Mormons Building Bridges, started a few weeks ago by Erika Munson, a mom of five from Sandy, Utah,  posted the following message on their Facebook event page.

Please come join Latter-day Saints in extending a message of love and support to our LGBT brothers and sisters by marching in the Utah pride parade. Each ...

NYT fail: “Men invented the internet”

Xeni Jardin at Boing Boing has a great response to this weekend’s New York Times’ piece on Ellen Pao’s sexual discrimination lawsuit against the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, which is problematic in its very first line:

MEN invented the Internet. And not just any men. Men with pocket protectors. Men who idolized Mr. Spock and cried when Steve Jobs died. Nerds. Geeks. Give them their due. Without men, we would never know what our friends were doing five minutes ago.

Jardin responds:

Radia “Mother ...
