If the Governor of Tennessee signs this bill into law, miscarriage will count as murder.

At The New Yorker, Anna Holmes on “Girls.”

In California, there’s been progress on a new bill that would protect patients from predatory and harmful “ex-gay therapists.”

Florida Gov. Rick Scott Holds Meeting On Personal Injury Protection Insurance

Florida Gov. vetoes funding for rape centers during Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Turns out that when you veto funding for rape crisis centers in the middle of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the headlines pretty much just write themselves. While the Florida legislature had allocated $1.5 million to 30 rape crisis centers in the state, Gov. Rick Scott used his line-item veto power to cut the funding.

The Governor claimed the funding was “duplicative, since, as a state, we already fund sexual violence programs.” But Jennifer Dritt, the executive director of the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence, said individual centers could lose between $30,000 and $100,000 each and don’t have enough funds to serve the 1.2 million women in Florida who “already have been victimized.” She told the Huffington Post:

“We say ‘here’s ...

Undercover anti-choicers use sex-selective abortion in attempt to discredit Planned Parenthood

It seems that anti-choice zealot Lila Rose and her team at Live Action may be at it again. You’ll no doubt remember that last year the conservative “sting” operation “uncovered” the horrifying fact that Planned Parenthood provides health information and services to sex trafficking victims. Now a string of similar incidents suggests the focus of Live Action’s next video may be sex-selective abortion. The Huffington Post report:

According to Planned Parenthood spokesperson Chloe Cooney, clinics in at least 11 states have reported two dozen or more “hoax visits” over the past several weeks, in which a woman walks into a clinic, claims to be pregnant and asks a particular pattern of provocative questions about sex-selective abortions, such as how ...

Australian Speaker of the House steps aside amid sexual harassment allegations

Yesterday, Australian Speaker of the House Peter Slipper stepped aside amid sexual harassment and other allegations.

Slipper, who defected from the Liberal party last year, thereby giving Julia Gillard’s government a razor-thin majority, has denied the allegations made by his former aide in federal court last week. ABC News reports:

James Ashby says he was continually harassed by Mr Slipper since he began working for the speaker in December last year.

He says it is clear the Speaker only hired him to pursue a sexual relationship.

… Mr Ashby – who is gay – says in his first weeks on the job, Mr Slipper requested massages, asked him for graphic details about his sex life and sent him suggestive text messages.

In one of ...

One Direction to girls everywhere: your low self-esteem is hot

If you’ve been listening to the radio, or watching TV, or indeed breathing the air in Sydney lately, you won’t have been able to avoid One Direction, the British boy band that was in town last week (they hit the States in May).

One Direction arrived in Sydney around the same time I did, but sadly, there were no throngs of screaming tween girls waiting for me (god, don’t you wish there were throngs of screaming tween girls following feminists wherever they went? Doesn’t have to be me, obviously, but any feminist. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we were that excited, as a culture, about feminists? Maybe if the Feministing crew sang about feminism instead of writing and speaking, and got ...

What we missed

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality of HHS has a new report out highlighting significant disparities in access to healthcare for trans people. The study writes, “Too often, policymakers, service providers, the media, and society at large have dismissed or discounted the needs of transgender and gender non-conforming people in their communities, and a paucity of hard data on the scope of antitransgender discrimination has hampered the struggle for basic fairness.”

An interview with Barney Frank on leaving Congress and other things–a really great read.

The real secret service scandal: NOT paying for sex

The Secret Service debacle has been politicized, sensationalized and commodified. Spirit Airlines has launched a “more bang for your buck” ad, with an “upfront payment is required” warning.  The Republicans have made it an Obama issue, the president is angry and the press has covered it as a salacious scandal.  Meanwhile, neither the politicians nor the press have covered the real transgression. This was not about  U.S. government workers paying for sex; this was about refusing to pay for it.  In Colombia’s “tolerance zones,” the sex trade is legal. And yet, a U.S. citizen and government worker thought it was all right to break the law by giving a sex worker $30, less than a twentieth ...
