Feminist Photo Blog Project

Young woman of color holding a sign that says "This is what a feminist looks like. Amy, 24, California"

I love projects that try and demonstrate the diversity of self-identified feminists. Via twitter, a new tumblr that’s trying to do just that:

I hope to capture the many different faces of feminism with this photo blog project. It will require people power, but with now 7 billion (and counting) people on Earth, that shouldn’t be a problem now, should it? Email: feministphotoblogproject@gmail.com with your own feminist picture!

Amy, the awesome feminist responsible, is pictured above. A little bit about her:

My name is Amy. I’m a 24 year old college grad from Southern California. My favorite color is purple. I have a little dog I treat like a baby. I am a compulsive tweeter and an overall social media fiend. This is what a feminist looks like.

I’m a ChineseMexicanAmerican feminist and I want to see more people of color representing this large (and growing) movement. I’m not saying I want black and brown and multicolored people (yeah it’s a word) on the cover of People, Time, Ms. right away (though that’d be nice), but I am saying I know a good amount of people who don’t look like the status quo, and I want to showcase them. I’m also not waging war against white feminists. Trust. I am saying, “yes, we’ve all seen that white feminists are alive and out and proud. Now let’s show the world that people of color also claim feminism!” I am welcoming people of all backgrounds to join me in this project!

That’s a project I can get down with. Go here to see all the posts so far and submit your own!
