Facebook Finds

It’s important to recognize that a social networking site, at some level, represents an extension of our selves. So with applications like pages on Facebook, it’s easy to click, like, and show the world (because your name and photo aren’t hidden from that) what you like, agree with, find humorous, etc.

Sometimes pages are created that are incredibly offensive. Luckily Facebook has a “report page” option. I’ve recently started posting on my blog the disturbing ones I’ve come across for others to report and hopefully remove.

Some might say this is silly, pointless and not a big deal. However, the reason it’s important to remove these pages is because, not only do they represent values in our culture, but they are a prime place to foster hatred and discrimination openly. If it’s there, it’s accepted, perpetuated, and on display. If you need proof past the title? Simply skim through the comments, the people who like it have no shame in maintaining the values of the “joke.”

Some recent examples:

‘I took my girlfriend out last night’ ‘really?’ ‘yeah one punch’

Throwing eggs at a slut, brick shaped eggs – made from brick.

Kick the bitch, why? coz shes a slut

you know shes playing hard to get when your chasing her down an alleyway.”

These pages, although just something “silly and pointless” on Facebook, clearly exemplify how shaming women can directly lead to and harbor violence.

I’ve written before about how damaging jokes can be. A Facebook page where people can have verbal volleyball about how women are fucking retarded. only good for rooting. coz the birds i know cant even cook fucking shit cunts” is, at the very least, harmful to our community. It’s never just a joke, and in this case, it’s never just a thing on Facebook.

Happy reporting.
