Middle School Girl Saves Baby Finch from Violence

My mom is a talk radio lover and the other day she told me about a news story she heard while driving to work.  It was about 12-year-old Jessica Jordan, a middle school student in Granada Hills, CA.  During lunch, Jessica witnessed three male schoolmates knock down a finch nest containing a mama bird and her three baby birds.  The male students started to stomp the baby birds and hit them with their backpacks.  Jessica rushed up to the horrific scene and starting hitting the boys to stop.  She managed to rescue one of the baby birds who was starting to bleed.  Teachers aided Jessica in trying to keep the baby bird alive while Jessica called her mother who whisked the baby bird off to an animal care provider.  The male students were suspended for their violent acts.

Thanks to Jessica’s courage and caring heart the baby finch is alive and well today.  I thought the Feministing community would appreciate it.

This story touched me in multiple ways.  I’m such an animal lover and I’m glad that Jessica saved a little baby bird.  Secondly, I’m proud of her for standing up to a crowd of boys who were engaging in a violent act.  She stood her ground to what was clearly wrong and extremely disturbing.  I’m not pointing fingers and saying that girls are better than boys, I don’t believe that–we are all the same.  What I am saying is that for being so young, Jessica was not afraid to stand up for what was right–even in the face of danger.  Her act make her a heroine.
