Kansas moves to be only state without one place to get an abortion

A Planned Parenthood in Kansas was denied state license to perform abortions based on new regulations that Senator Brownbeck has decided to implement. These new regulations, that include things like how many bathrooms there are in a facility, (surprise), only apply to abortion clinics. Not only are these new laws bizarre and obviously created to deny any woman in Kansas from having access to abortion, this also means there is no facility or doctor’s office in all of Kansas where a woman can obtain an abortion.

via Wichita Eagle,

Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri disclosed the denial by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in a lawsuit it filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan. Its clinic is in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park.

Both the rules and a new clinic licensing law are to take effect Friday and already are the subject of another lawsuit filed by other doctors who perform abortions in Kansas. A hearing on that lawsuit is set for 3 p.m. Friday in federal court in Kansas City, Kan.

The state has until 6 p.m. today to respond to the cases brought by Aid for Women in Kansas City, Kan. and two physicians who perform abortions at an obstetrics and gynecological clinic in Overland Park.

We already know what unintended pregnancies cost us, but just when you think anti-choicers couldn’t go any lower, they do. Also, check out Maddow’s segment on it below.

The way these laws that effectively ban abortion are set up in a VERY similar fashion to Jim Crow laws, and serve the same purpose – to keep women from achieving equality. I think we need to start calling the right out on this. It’s all so ugly.
Also – if the ERA does not pass in congress, we need to raise some true hell. Just sayin’.

    Update! As of this afternoon!
Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri WILL, indeed, get a license to continue providing abortion care to Kansans.
(The KC Star article is here.)

This doesn’t mean that these rules are any less onerous or impossibly burdensome or that it’s ok that the other two providers in the KC area were not licensed. All this means is that women who need abortion care will still have 1/3 of the options they had, instead of zero. Lawsuits are still going forward, donations are still needed. (The Center for Reproductive Rights is working on the suit from Dr. Hodes and the Aid for Women clinic.)

So celebrate a little for PPKM (who, btw, also still have a lawsuit pending to restore Title X funding). Send some love to the other two providers in Kansas. Keep an eye on Kansas. Sam Brownback is a scary, scary man to have in the governor’s office.

God, I hope that there are clinics in the nearby states of: Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, and Missouri. And with gas prices…..hopefully there’s still birth control distribution there still.
