Pat Robertson’s logic about abortion and women.

Pat Robertson is evergreen blog fodder, because when I am struggling with finding something to write about, I know I can count on him to have said something that will make us LOL and give us a taste of the profound ignorance that resides between his ears. According to a clip of him from the 700 Club, the reason that the left supports funding for Planned Parenthood is because of our “culture of death.” Our “culture of death” allows women to lesbians which puts women on a level playing field. Hey, I can’t make this shit up.

Quick hit: How colleges get around Title IX (hint: it’s by lying)

It’s long been an open secret that colleges tend to work around the rules in order to make it look like they’re complying with Title IX, the law that, among other things, requires institutions that receive federal funding to distribute that money equally between men’s and women’s sports teams. Today, the New York Times ran a damning article about all the different loopholes that schools use to get around that requirement:

At the University of South Florida, more than half of the 71 women on the cross-country roster failed to run a race in 2009. Asked about it, a few laughed and said they did not know they were on the team.

At Marshall University, the women’s tennis coach recently invited ...

Caitlin Flanagan calls for the end of fraternities

This weekend, the Wall Street Journal ran an op-ed by Caitlin Flanagan, in which she discussed the appallingly high incidence of sexual violence perpetrated by fraternity brothers, and called for the dissolution of fraternities “for young women’s good.”

I was surprised to find myself agreeing with Flanagan at certain points in this article. I usually take issue with the way she writes about young women and sex, but in this case, I think we see eye to eye on a number of points.

She’s certainly correct in her belief that fraternities can breed a noxious, violent culture in which young masculinity is measured in pitchers consumed and women fucked. And she’s certainly correct that fraternities can be dangerous places for ...

What We Missed

Friday was the one year anniversary of the passage of SB 1070, the much-opposed anti-immigrant Arizona legislation. Seth Freed Wessler at Colorlines talks about the anniversary and how the biggest problem facing immigrant communities today isn’t actually these state bills–it’s the federal government’s policies.

Texas law makers are trying to roll back a law in the state that allows transgender people to marry.

Our very own Chloe Angyal is speaking in NYC on Wednesday in a blogger/author dialogue with Cara Hoffman, author of So Much Pretty. Details here.

A new tactic in the growing field of anti-choice legislation that patronizes women and interferes with medical practice: requiring doctors to offer women a print out of the ultrasound photo ...

People in the sex trade respond to GEMS media storm

An INCITE! affiliate and collective of radical women of color, queer people of color, and Indigenous people who identify as people in the sex trades has written a compelling response to Rinku Sen’s ColorLines article “The Complexities of Sex Trafficking, and Some Simple Solutions.” I see their piece as addressing the larger media storm around “Girls Like Us,” the new book from GEMS founder Rachel Lloyd, which is the focus of Sen’s original article. In discussing any issue, especially one like the sex trade where those involved are marginalized in our culture, I think it is vital to center the voices of those most impacted. Lloyd was formerly in the sex trade, but her work is ...

Baby laughs at dog popping bubbles…for social justice

It’s only Monday and the news is already too depressing. It’s self care time. This video’s a little old in internet time – it’s from last week – but it is super important:

My friend Malissa informs me this video really is feminist because “the bubbles represent oppression.” So there’s that.

Internet erupts over video of trans woman attacked at McDonald’s

Late last week video of a trans woman being beaten by two cis women in a Baltimore area McDonald’s made its way online. The video was shot by Vernon Hackett, who put the video out in public, basically trying to turn the brutal attack into torture porn. Hackett has since been fired.

The posting of the video and subsequent e-media storm has forced Chrissy Lee Polis, the woman who was attacked, out into the open and made her more fearful for her safety. The beating was brutal enough already, and Polis says it was not the only transphobic violence she has experienced. The internet reaction, where Polis’ personal information has been dug up and she’s been put in ...

Law firm pulls out of DOMA defense case

Maya wrote last week about how the House GOP had committed half a million dollars to an outside law firm to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The Obama administration recently announced they would decline to defend pieces of the law, prompting the GOP case.

Now the law firm has backed out of the case, according to Amanda Terkel of the Huffington Post. This pull-out may have been due to the intense amount of press the arrangement received, in part because it came so quickly after a budget fight where the House GOP members emphasized spending cuts so adamantly.

Metro Weekly has more, and full article from Amanda here.
