South Dakota abortion bill requiring 3 day wait and CPC visit becomes law

South Dakota continues to distinguish itself as the leader in passing the most restrictive abortions bans in the nation. Mind you, South Dakota only has ONE clinic that provides abortion at all. ONE. Probably not a coincidence considering how difficult lawmakers in the State want to make it for women to get the procedure.

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a law Tuesday requiring women to wait three days after meeting with a doctor to have an abortion, the longest waiting period in the nation.

Abortion rights groups have already said they plan to file a lawsuit challenging the measure, which also requires women to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions.

Daugaard, who gave no interviews after signing the bill, said in a written statement that he has conferred with state attorneys who will defend the law in court and a sponsor who has pledged private money to finance the state’s legal costs.

“I think everyone agrees with the goal of reducing abortion by encouraging consideration of other alternatives,” the Republican governor said the statement. “I hope that women who are considering an abortion will use this three-day period to make good choices.”

Not surprising to see the Governor spouting paternalistic bullshit about women using the three days to “make good choices.”

Fuck you Governor Daugaard for thinking you have any business being involved in our choices. Obviously if it was up to you, we wouldn’t have a choice at all.

    Republicans: The Great Paternalistic-Small-Government Paradox.

It never ceases to blow my mind. “I think everyone agrees with the goal of reducing abortion by encouraging consideration of other alternatives”
How about encouraging what stops the pregnancies from the get-go: BETTER SEX EDUCATION AND MORE ACCESS TO CONTRACEPTIVES. For fuck’s sake.

I’m so angry with this. These people must be stopped….I’m attending prochoice lobby day in Washington and made calls in my state, but it’s not enough and I feel so powerless. I don’t think I can say it enough that THESE PEOPLE MUST BE STOPPED.

It’s at times like these, I wish I could move to South Dakota, offer up a transportation service to a neighboring state and have a full time job of escorting women to safe-haven states where they can stimulate their economy while exercising their rights (or what should be their rights) to choose what to do with their bodies. This is so despicable.

      Amen to that, sister!

There is seriously just ONE clinic that provides abortions in the ENTIRE state of South Dakota and they’re even bothering to spend time passing bills on it?!?!?! What kind of shit is that??!!

I sucked at geography and have never been to South Dakota but I do know that it isn’t one of those tiny states where you can drive across it in a few hours, right? 3 days is a long time. I hate waiting 3 days for pay day if I want to buy a stupid new purse. I can’t imagine…fuck this guy! Are there even that many abortions a year in South Dakota that this even matters?
