Former Israeli President convicted of rape, facing real jail time

Former Israeli president Moshe Katsav was convicted earlier this month of rape and sexual harassment of several employees, and can now get up to 16 years in prison for it.

The conviction is seen as a very significant dent  in Israel’s male entitlement culture, as well as a victory for women’s rights groups and even the Israeli judiciary, which has shown that it can hold accountable those who occupy high positions in the government. The Israeli Prime Minister approved of the decision as well, saying:

“The court sent two clear and sharp messages: that everyone is equal and every woman has the full right to her body”

Here’s an article from Ha’aretz about the importance of this decision in Israeli feminism/problems that remain
