Quote of the Day, brought to you by Secretary Clinton

Not amused.

This is from last week, but I always get happy when I see female politicians calling folks out on their sexist bullshit. During a “townterview” in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan last week, just moments after she was talking to a young female lawyer about the fact that she’ll have to deal with sexist colleagues who will notice what she’s wearing, the moderator took it upon himself to ask:

MODERATOR 1: Okay. Which designers do you prefer?

SECRETARY CLINTON: What designers of clothes?

SECRETARY CLINTON: Would you ever ask a man that question? (Laughter.) (Applause.)

MODERATOR 1: Probably not. Probably not. (Applause.)

That’s awesome. Of course, the rest of the internet is probably going “OMG What a bitch! Most women pay more attention to fashion than men, that’s not sexist!”

Yes, most women do pay more attention to fashion than men, but that is not the point. It doesn’t matter what your opinion of Hilary is, you still can’t deny that her reaction was valid. I believe she was trying to say to the moderator that she should not be looked at differently as a woman, but as a leader and her gender shouldn’t play a role in her political life. People do not want to know about what she is wearing, they want to know what types of politics she is influencing. The fact that this particular moderator is more interested in her fashion than her ideas makes his comments sexist and she was 100% justified in calling him out on it.
