I love me some Tim Gunn.

No. Really.

I love what he says in the video, and I love the “It Gets Better” campaign — but I’m having trouble with full-out love for Tim Gunn, knowing that he’s been a big promoter of gender stereotyping. Sad that he does not see the connection between gender-policing Hillary Clinton and homophobic bullying….

Excellent, yeah kids, it gets better as you get older. Don’t worry, I know that you’re questioning your sexuality right now, and it’s hard when maybe your family and peers are so down about LGBTIQ people. But it’s okay, when you’re older and have done research and met others who had went through the same thing as you and meeting some great people that have that in common with you or are sympathetic and genuinely accepting of who you are.

I like this idea too – but someone recently pointed me in the direction of another project that is more empowering for youth:

Is anyone else frustrated that all these messages are for us queers (and allies) to buck up or fight harder? Where are the celebrities saying “hey you – stop being a bully!” and “stop violating people’s rights” and “it isn’t cool to be hateful or mean or homophobic. knock it out.”

I love both the messages of “it gets better” and of “make it better” but where is the message to the perpetrators to stop perpetrating??
