Women MCs: Doing double what a dude could do
This week BET premiered a documentary about women MCs: My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women in Hip Hop. (Which takes its name from the Salt ‘n’ Pepa song.)
(Apologies that I could not find a transcript on BET’s website.)
“If a woman were to actually step up to you on the mic and hold her own, she was actually doing double what a dude could do,” says Chuck D. Missy Elliott talks about the first time she rapped. MC Lyte explains how she drops her voice a little lower when she’s on the mic. Salt ‘n’ Pepa discuss their dance moves. Seriously, watch it.
MissInfo has parts 2 and 3.
