Quick hit: Do you have a penis? You are not allowed to drink this delicious beverage.

At Sociological Images, Lisa takes a look at a man’s guide to which certain drinks (actually, all drinks except beer and scotch with ice) are unacceptable for them to drink in public.

File this under “patriarchy hurts men too,” because whatever this whipped cream garnished drink is, it looks delicious.

The issue of masculine and feminine behaviors seriously does need deconstructing, to the benefit of both men and women.

To that end, I have to ask, couldn’t you have found a better headline to post this under, one that doesn’t erase trans identities? I know you were going for cute and succinct, but was it really worth it? As a trans woman, and a long time reader, this really bothered me…enough so I finally registered just so I could leave this comment.

      /agree

Not all penises belong to men…and not all men have penises.

Yes, men are supposed to not need anything sugary or otherwise distracting from the taste of hard liquor. I can’t drink anymore because of my meds, but I’ll be honest, I never was a big fan of hard liquor without something to disguise the taste at least a little bit.

Wait, I’m not supposed to drink a half-gallon of chocolate milk a day because of its sweet sugary nature?

Well, maybe I shouldn’t on the basis that half of a gallon is a bit much. I’m working on it, though.

I’m not an alcohol person, though.

Cis het college guy here who exclusively orders sweet drinks, stemming from my lifelong love of sugar. Those who make a deal out of it are outed as sexist and weeded out.

I’m gonna have to back Renee up on this – as a trans ftm person I was pretty shocked and offended to see this headline up on this blog. Equating people’s genders with whether they have a penis or not, or their genitals generally really centers cis experience and makes trans people invisible, as well as delegitimizes their genders. it also bothered me enough that i created an account just to comment on that…

I don’t think she meant it like that. I took at as not Chloe’s opinion, but as “Lisa”. So maybe if you took it like that too then you will be able to see the point of the post. Hope that helps.

It was Chloe’s headline though, not Lisa’s. There is no mention of genitalia anywhere in Lisa’s article (although there is in the comments section).

I don’t think Chloe intended to be transphobic or anything, I just think she was trying to be edgy. But in so doing, hurt was caused. Simple enough to take note of and not do again.

Kinda sad a moderator never showed up to comment on this.
