Is sex equality in the interest of men? Our boy Kristof weighs in.

In last Wednesday’s op-ed by  Nicholas Kristof, he touched on a question that I have thought about for some time now: Is sex equality in the interest of men? Now you’ll remember Kristof for his co-penning of Half the Sky. His work is largely preoccupied with the plight of Non-western women. But every once in a while he throws US women a bone:

We men want our wives and daughters to encounter opportunity in the workplace, not sexual harassment; women want their husbands and sons to be in the executive suite, not jail. Nearly all of us root for fairness, not for our own sex.

The truth is that we men have typically benefited as women have gained greater ...

An introduction from Equal Writes!

I’m thrilled to introduce the kick-ass writers from Equal Writes, Princeton’s one and only feminist blog, who will be writing for  Feministing Campus. We’re very flattered to be included in this exciting new project, and we can’t wait to start sharing our (hopefully) delightful mishmash of perspectives with all of you. I’ll begin by introducing myself, and then give you a sense for our other writers’ interests and backgrounds, so that you’ll have a small taste of what we hope to contribute.

I (Amelia) am a senior, majoring in Religion with a certificate (Princeton-speak for minor) in Women & Gender Studies, and I’ve been a co-editor of Equal Writes ever since the blog was founded back in September 2008. Last ...

What We Missed

The NYT covers sissy bounce.

I counter any femmenist claims that women don’t have a capacity for some bullshit.

TED Fellow, Sophal Ear, pays homage to his late mother who “managed to outwit the Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese communists by escaping Cambodia to Vietnam with five young children.”

Check out this thoughtful post about the XVIII International AIDS Conference over at the International Museum of Women’s new blog, Her Blueprint.

The Juice Project gets recognized by The White House.

Alice Tepper Marlin, of Social Accountability International, on how to hold companies responsible in a globalized world.

LGBT Lutheran pastors reinstated

Seven LGBT Lutheran pastors from the Bay Area were reinstated on Sunday after being banned from serving in the church for two decades. The “Bay Area Seven” were welcomed back into the church about a year after it decided to allow gay and lesbian pastors.

In 1990 two San Francisco Lutheran churches, First United and St. Francis, ordained gay and lesbian pastors and were expelled from the denomination. On Sunday St. Francis also voted to rejoin the national Lutheran church.

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

It was a day of mixed feelings for the “Bay Area Seven” – the Revs. Jeff Johnson, Megan Rohrer, Paul Brenner, Craig Minich, Dawn Roginski Sharon Stalkfleet and Ross Merkel – who saw the event as ...

GLAAD releases report on LGBT representation on TV

GLAAD has released their fourth annual Network Responsibility Index, “an evaluation of the quantity, quality and diversity of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people on television.” GLAAD reviews the programming on all the major broadcast networks and 10 major cable networks and gives each a grade of Excellent, Good, Adequate, or Failing.

As I’ve argued before, media representation is important to humanize LGBT folks to a wider audience and to show queer and trans folks, especially youth who may not be a supportive environment, that other people like them exist and can be OK.

This year’s report shows a marked improvement in the representation of LGBT folks on TV. Some key findings:

This year, MTV becomes the first ...

Yay! Intros from WSAC

(Molly & Aidan at our favorite vegan-friendly all-night cafe)

Howdy! My name’s Aidan Sullivan from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities’s Women’s Student Activist Collective. Talking about myself is, um, odd. Let’s see – I’m 19, awkward & geeky, studying political science, economics, & gender studies. Things I do at WSAC: fill out tax forms, show people how to use Microsoft Excel, sign checks, & take too much responsibility onto myself. I joined WSAC for two reasons: I was sick to death of being called a hypersensitive bitch when I called people on misogynist & privileged language, and I was pretty sure I needed to dump all my misogynist & privileged friends. Now I spend far too ...

Podium girls and the Tour de WTF?

The New York Times ran an article about the taxing job of “hostess” at the much loved Tour de France. Apparently young women, mostly from Europe, work 12+ hour days, serving drinks and snacks, sharing crowded living quarters, and are continuously forced to smile, even when tired. (Sounds like the Tour directors and the truck drivers who pass through my neighborhood have something in common.)

So I get that many beauty pageants in the U.S. are associated with scholarships, and therefore, can be seen as a gateway, albeit a objectifying one, to educational opportunities. But this? Apparently the big winner gets…drum roll please…”The plum assignment is to award the jerseys to the top riders in Paris, where the stage ...

Not Oprah’s Book Club: Share This!

I recently had the pleasure of reading internet extraordinaire Deanna Zandt‘s newly released book, Share This: How You Will Change the World with Social Networking. You may have read her Feministing interview recently, but I thought I’d give you a bit of a better idea of what Share This offers its readers, and why you should buy the damn thing.

This book is not an instructional how-to on how to use social networking. It isn’t a step-by-step guide on how to use hashtags. What this book offers is a perspective into how social justice and the internet can be intrinsically connected, how they may conflict against one another, and most importantly, how we ...
