How to use My Feministing

Transcript after the jump.

Hey everybody, it’s Jessica.  I hope you’re enjoying the newly redesigned Feministing and having some fun.  I just wanted to take a minute to take you through one of our new features – and that’s the “My Feministing” feature – which happens to be my favorite part of the new site.  So I’m going to give you a little bit of a tutorial, and of course if there are questions or anything like that afterwards please feel free to leave them in comments.

Okay, so let’s go through how to use MyFeministing.  First of all, you can ignore this url up here, it’s a test url – when you do this it will just be feministing.com.  So as you can see, I’m all signed in and registered, and this is the little box where I would sign in.

And because I’m signed in I have a personalized dashboard going on up here, and this is my main center for action.  So I can see my notifications here – friend request or new messages – I can see them there.  I can also see what blogs I have access to.  And you also have a main place for all of your account activity.  So you have your profile, you can edit it and change your picture from here, you can check your messages and send a message from here, see your friends everything.

So now let’s go look at what a profile actually looks like.  Now this is my profile and your profile will look similar and as you can see the profile main page features my feed and this is any activity that I have going on on Feministing is going to show up on my feed.  So if I write a new blog post, if I comment, if I get a new friend it’s all gonna show up here.  And what’s fun is that anyone who is friends with me can keep up with my activity through this feed.  And the same is true if I go to my friends feeds.  And I can see from my friends feed what my friends are up to – so I can see that Lori wrote a new blog post, Jos wrote a new blog post.  And this is really the best way to keep track of what all of your favorite bloggers on the site are doing.  And that’s not just Feministing bloggers, but also Community bloggers, Campus bloggers – this is your main source of action where you can see what’s going on in terms of who you’re following.

What’s also really cool is that you can post updates to your profile.  So you can see my last update was a little love letter to Samhita, and by tagging her like this, exactly in the same way you would do in Twitter, Samhita will get notified that I said something about her.  And I can also see if someone said something about me by clicking on here.  I can also check my messages from here, sadly I have no messages as of yet.  I can also compose a message from here to anyone that I’m friends with.  So I’m friends with Samhita, if I start to type in her name she’s gonna show up and I can also add other friends.

The only other thing you need to know is how to friend someone, and all you have to do is go to their profile, and there will be a little add friend button and you click on that and that’s how you get started.

And of course, if I want to change anything in my profile, I can do it here, in addition to doing it on the top dashboard, I can edit my profile, I can change my profile or anything else.

So there you have it – that’s My Feministing!  I hope that you like it and enjoy it, I certainly like it a lot.  But really I hope that it changes the way that you use the site, that it enhances the way you work on the site, the way you connect with other people on the site I think it’s going going to be a really terrific feature.

That said, if you have any questions or concerns, leave them in comments or email us.  Thanks a lot!
