What We Missed

New York is close to finally allowing no-fault divorce.
Campus Progress has a campaign to stop the deportation of students in the United States, after a 19 year old Harvard sophomore was detained and put into deportation hearings. The campaign is connected to the DREAM Act, which would provide a path to citizenship for kids brought to the US without documents before the age of 12.
Perez Hilton is a jerk, and I’m ashamed that he’s taken on my family name (Perez) as his persona. Read more about how he’s trying to defend the fact that he posted pictures of Miley Cyrus’ crouch to his twitterfeed because he wanted to teach her to act like a lady. Asshole.

I’m waiting for them to arrest Perez Hilton for child pornography. What he did was wrong and qualifies under that.

Perhaps I’m too cynical and I should regard show business in a more positive light, but what I see in the situation with Miley is a savvy young woman (who is almost 18, by the way) who uses the opportunistic paparazzi to play the media like a violin. Like so many other media stunts, I doubt that this wasn’t planned (Lindsey Lohan, anyone?). Because this is show business and they value publicity, it’s hard to believe in anyone’s innocence. The Perez character revels in gossip and exploitation, but is Miley the sweet, innocent victim? If this had happened a few months from now, hardly anyone would even blink an eye.
She’s a minor, so it would be nice if the media would focus on the legal aspects of this, instead of the attempts at moralizing which are either naïve and disingenuous at best, or hypocritical at worst.

Perez Hilton is a misogynistic, racist, homophobic (yeah I said it) piece of shit asshole. He’s always mocking girls and women for their bodies, insulting older women, and also taunts closeted gay celebrities to come out of the closet.
He is a TRUE example of a woman hater. FUCK Perez Hilton.

I’ve always felt like Perez Hilton was little more than a loudmouth with the maturity of a teenager. I particularly dislike how his past behavior has reflected on the entire LGBT community and this incident only emphasizes that more.

Also, and I don’t think I saw this mentioned anywhere here, Christina Aguilera recently made some very feminist comments about women owning their sexuality: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20393540,00.html.
Unfortunately, she refuses to label herself as feminist in the interview.

I believe the photos in question were photoshoped nudes with Miley’s head skillfully attached. It looked like a naked Miley, but in fact all the nudity was from another woman.

That’s because she has less fem-cred than Sarah Palin.

I’m surprised that people haven’t been more vocal on the no fault divorce thing. This is a huge step forward.
