Today in Feminist History: Happy Birthday Kate Bornstein!

According to twitter, Kate Bornstein turns 62 today.

This is the photo from Kate’s twitter page, which I can only hope is a self-portrait.
Kate Bornstein is a self-professed gender outlaw, writer and performer. Kate’s work includes three books, Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws, Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us and My Gender Workbook.
Much of ze’s hir* writing focuses on gender and the experiences of trans folks, based on Kate’s own experiences. Kate’s writing has had an important impact on the world of thinking about gender, and feminism has benefited from this as well.
Happy Birthday Kate!
*I originally misused the form of the gender neutral pronoun ze. This is a good resource (downloadable PDF) explaining how to use the different gender neutral pronouns.
