Huge, Gigantic, Disgusting Gender Fail at The Onion

DISCLAIMER: Because I have been accused of this in the past whenever I engage in critique of misogynistic media, no, I do not think that media like this, or porn, or whatever, should be censored or criminalized. I do think we should work as actively as possible to create the same general atmosphere surrounding this type of media as we can usually find in response to a generally equivalent piece of media on the topic of race.
I am not sure how exactly to best vandalize the Onion with physical graffiti, but their newest video, entitled “VH1 Reality Show Bus Crashes in California Causing Major Slut Spill” is really hands-down the most dehumanizing and misogynistic piece of satire I have seen in a long time. I tend to have pretty thick skin with regards to these things. I thought the piece they did about PETA (“We will not rest until every animal on earth is given more respect than women!”) was funny. But this… “VH1 encouraged to transport sluts in lead containers, bury used sluts 100 feet underground?” Bury used sluts 100 feet underground. Really? There may very well be plenty to criticize about VH1 reality shows, whatever. The media is the gendered equivalent of blackface, it’s not at all a clever trope to begin with, and it is going to ensure that the dehumanization of and sexual violence against women, especially sex workers — or even just women who you know, prefer to wear miniskirts — is further naturalized into our culture. Please write the Onion telling them what is wrong with this. Or just be aware that like, the people who write this are probably making more money more than you are. I can’t really figure out the best venue for complaints… the best I have is the general contact page for the Onion:http://www.theonion.com/content/contact_us — and the General Editor’s twitter. http://twitter.com/randazzoj If anyone else has any ideas about how to speak out, please share.
