Marines and Leg Hair

So I have a this problem: I like to wear dresses.
It doesn’t sound like a problem but aside from the fact that it’s nearly impossible to find dresses that don’t look like the 1980s thrift store reject colors barfed up on them the problem with dresses is that I HATE shaving my legs. Part of the reason for that is my shower. My shower likes to adjust the water pressure and water temperature all by itself so I always have goosebumps and goosebumps do not get along with razors.
I can’t just NOT shave because of another, small, little-known fact: according to the Marine Corps grooming regulations, female Marines may not have “unsightly” leg hair. So if I show up for PT (physical training) one morning without having shaved my legs in the two weeks prior, I’m in the same boat as any male Marine who dares show up with two weeks’ worth of stubble on his chin. (Or knowing some guys, it would be a full beard)

Marine Corps Uniform Regulations – Chapter 1- Section 1004. Personal Appearance: No female Marine will be required to remove leg hair except where considered unsightly and cannot be covered with appropriate hosiery…
But maybe I wouldn’t get trouble after all…because the only time we would be expected to wear hosiery is while wearing a skirt and that’s not often, if ever. So what about PT gear? Since nobody in their right mind would wear pantyhose for jogging is it okay to have flowing leg hair when you are wearing PT gear? Or would some nutjob expect you to cover up your leg hair in PT gear?
Then I found what’s apparently the new draft of the Uniform Regs and it has an update to the leg hair section! OMG!!1! Why isn’t the mainstream media reporting on this?!
8. Body Hair. No female Marine will be required to remove body hair except where leg hair protrudes beyond the appropriate hosiery…or causes a visibly uneven texture under said hosiery.
It still isn’t clear whether you can be hairy in running shorts or not but I assume that you can, as long as your hairy-ness would be concealed if you did happen to put on pantyhose. It’s the same idea with the head hair rules: I’m allowed to have my butt-long hair in a ponytail for PT but it’s not allowed to be in a ponytail when I’m in uniform.
Hopefully this new draft is approved because I’m glad they took out the word “unsightly”. Who decides what “unsightly” is? What if your superiors don’t care about leg hair but someone of a higher rank in another unit who thinks hairy legs are gross sees you? Who do you have to listen to? It’s vague, totally subjective, and insulting too. Every single human being on Earth grows leg hair. Who are you to tell me that MINE is disgusting and unpleasant to look at?!
Somebody better clarify ASAP or I might have to appoint myself as the guinea pig test case. I’ll be the pain-in-the-rear who stops shaving to see what happens. I can’t believe this is even an issue and that they are being so vague about it.
What makes me angrier is when male Marines complain about female Marines who have a mustache or other “excess” facial hair. There are no regulations on female facial hair just as there are no regulations on male leg hair, but somehow, these men believe they have to right to tell a woman to shave her face if they don’t like the hair. Can you picture the reaction if I told one of them to shave his legs?
I can only imagine the reaction if I stopped shaving mine, what with the pale white skin and black hair. They think leg hair is icky, dirty, or worse, European. But I sure do hate shaving…
P.S. Just for the record, there are a few male Marines who shave their leg hair too, for whatever reason…one of whom I met told us that his leg hair removal procedure takes him 45 minutes of shower time and involves exfoliating with body wash and a poofy, then applying warm baby oil, then shaving with a fancy-pants men’s razor.
