Ohio isn’t an anomaly—the anti-choice movement is about punishment

Earlier this month, the Ohio state House passed a bill that would ban abortion with virtually zero exceptions when the fetus develops a heartbeat at about six weeks, which is before many women realize they’re pregnant. And as of last week, Ohio’s state House is considering another bill, HB 565, which would confer personhood upon fetuses and criminalize abortion.

Infographic of the day: women’s rights by country

Pop quiz: which country mandates that employers give women breaks to nurse their babies? Kazakhstan? Or Canada? Where is it easier to get an abortion? Argentina or Bolivia? I bet the answers will surprise you. Check out this excellent interactive chart, which looks at laws (or the lack thereof) on abortion, property rights, harassment, discrimination, domestic violence, work and more, country by country.

Quote of the Day: “An abortion doesn’t un-rape a woman.”

*Trigger warning*

So last night I tuned into CrossFire on CNN to support my friend and new CNN contributor Sally Kohn. The debate about women’s reproductive rights on the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade was between anti-choice hoaxter Lila Rose and NARAL President Ilyse Hogue.

When I tuned in, I expected to hear Lila Rose spew the usual non-sense about babies being “ripped apart” during the abortion procedures that exist only in her vivid imagination.

What I didn’t expect to hear (because I’m clearly naive) is a woman say on national television, “An abortion doesn’t un-rape a woman.” That was Rose’s response to a question about abortion exceptions for rape and incest. Rose opposes ...

Afghan women’s affairs official assassinated on her way to work

Yesterday, Najia Sediqi, the head of women’s affairs for a local province in eastern Afghanistan, was shot to death on her way to work.

This is part of a systematic effort to intimidate high-profile female officials. Just a few months ago, Sediqi’s predecessor died in a car bomb attack attributed to the Taliban. Sediqi had repeatedly requested police protection but to no avail. “There is only one reason behind killing women: to prevent women from working in the government,” explains a local representative.

Today, the UN released a report on the state of Afghan women’s rights. It found the country still has a long way to go in implementing the groundbreaking 2009 Law on Elimination of Violence against Women–which criminalized child marriage, selling and buying ...

The gender gap is closed? Yeah right.

The lastest poll numbers have everyone freaking out but one thing about Pew poll stood out to me:  The poll has Romney and Obama tied among likely women voters.  The last time the poll was conducted a month ago, President Obama had an 18 point lead.

So what gives?  Over at the New York Daily News I wrote that this detail stands out mainly because Romney had a great performance in a debate that didn’t mention women’s issues once so closing the gender gap is highly unlikely and probably due to an oversampling of older, married women.  That turns out to be the case.

Ask yourself this: What has Mitt Romney done in the past month to ...

Calling bullshit on Romney’s latest abortion claim

Mitt Romney thinks American women are dumb.  Either that or he hopes we aren’t paying attention. At an editorial board meeting with the Des Moines Register the newly “etch-a-sketched” version of Mitt Romney was asked about the critical issue of choice and what his administration will do if he’s elected.

Romney told the Des Moines Register:

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”

But by executive order, not by legislation, he would reinstate the so-called Mexico City policy that bans U.S. foreign aid dollars from being used to do abortions, he said.

President Barack Obama dropped the policy on his tenth day in office, Romney said.

I call bullshit.  Romney was asked whether ...

Obama for America launches “For All” website to hit Romney for dismissing half the nation

In 2008, Obama for America broke down barriers with their website format which mirrored Facebook (and was in fact designed by one of the founders of Facebook) and in doing so appealed specifically to younger voters.  This year, the Obama campaign is leaps and bounds ahead of Team Romney when it comes to the effective use of social media.

Today they have launched a great new interactive site in response to Mitt Romney’s now infamous (and a popular GIF’d “gaffe”) 47% video which shows America which campaign is FOR ALL which is intended to target voters between the ages of 18-29 (for a second I’ll pretend that I’m 29).

The images will appear on the Obama 2012 Instagram and everyone can ...
