PBS series Women, War and Peace kicks off tonight

Feministing is excited to partner up with PBS and philanthropist and filmmaker extraordinaire Abigail Disney for a five-part series launching tonight on the impact of war on women:

The series reveals how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with women becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualties. Yet they are simultaneously emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict. With depth and complexity, Women, War & Peace spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialogue about ...

Post-earthquake recovery efforts are failing Haitian women

According to a new report from Human Rights Watch, more than a year and half after the earthquake in Haiti, the recovery efforts have failed to protect the health and rights of women.

The LA Times reports:

Despite a mammoth humanitarian-care push in the wake of the Jan. 12, 2010, quake that killed as many as 300,000 people, serious gaps exist in the healthcare that women and girls are receiving, according to a report released Tuesday by the New York-based Human Rights Watch.

Pregnant women reported having to give birth in alleyways or on floors; being unable to afford transportation to hospitals, and not having access to prenatal care.

Human Rights Watch also documented widespread sexual violence and “transactional sex,” ...

New ad for “Cosmo for Guys” lets you get inside a girl’s head

Some ads, such as the Summer’s Eve videos we covered recently, seem doomed to be sexist and terrible because the product they’re selling is. This new video promoting an iPad-only “Cosmo for Guys” magazine that promises to let (straight) men know “what women want” is like that.

As bad as this ad is, I’m sure the product will be even worse. In case the idea wasn’t painfully clear, the video’s director explained: “The concept and analogy here is to show a guy ‘getting inside a girl’s head’ and sort of ‘reading her mind’ by flipping through the magazine pages on the iPad. The reason for that is: it is the first magazine for men that is written by ...

What exactly do we have to do for you to watch women’s soccer?

According to three members of France’s womens’ soccer team, Gaetine Thiney, Elodie Thomis and Corine Franco, it’s probably–show up naked. In a risky move, all three players posed nude for a German magazine to generate some discussion around why people aren’t as interested as they should be in women’s soccer. The image, while so obviously sexual, is made interesting with the caption, “Is this how we should show up before you come to our games?”

Most people are missing the point, arguing that these women are using sex to garner more viewership. And while on one level that might be true, it is really the controversy around using the image that is being used for more attention–a decidedly political ...

Kirsten Gillibrand: The women’s movement is stalled

I’ve got me a bone to pick with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

It was my mom who actually got pissed while watching Morning Joe last week and brought this conversation to my attention where Gillibrand, Tina Brown and others discuss the state of women in politics. No, it wasn’t the part where she talks about how women can be useful politicians because we’re better listeners than men — it was her contention that women don’t want their voices to be heard. Literally.

Saudi women’s rights activists arrested for challenging driving ban

This weekend, Manal al-Sharif and her brother were arrested by Saudi authorities after posted a video on YouTube (has hence been made private) that shows her driving a car and convincing others to, on June 17th, in protest of Saudi Arabia’s ban against women driving.

Sharif is one of the organizers of Women2Drive, a right-to-drive campaign to be launched on the 17th. Interestingly enough, there is no actual law that bans women from driving, but citizens have to use locally issued licenses that can’t be issued to women — so Women2Drive are telling their followers to use foreign-issued licenses. Nesrine Malik at the Guardian writes about the campaign and her own experience ...

Secretary Clinton says no to second term

In an interview with Wolf Blitzer in Cairo, Secretary Hillary Clinton gives it to us straight:

Q- If the president is reelected, do you want to serve a second term as secretary of state?

No

Q- Would you like to serve as secretary of defense?

No

Q- Would you like to be vice president of the United States?

No

Q- Would you like to be president of the United States?

No

She gives some explanation about her reasons for not running for president again (which we expected), but I’m curious to hear more about her decisions not to take a second term (full interview will air on The Situation Room at 5 pm EST). I’ll admit I’m disappointed — she has been ...
