Yesterday, the Pentagon announced plans to allow women into more front-line, combat jobs. The Service Women’s Action Network expressed disappointment that women will still be barred from serving as infantry, armor, and special operations forces, but said that the new rules were a big step in the right direction. As Adam Weinstein writes, “full gender equity in the ranks is no longer a question of ‘if’ but ‘when.'”

Explosives expert becomes second British woman to die in Afghanistan conflict

The British Ministry of Defence reported earlier this week that Captain Lisa Jade Head, a bomb disposal expert stationed in Helmand Province in Afghanistan, had become the second British woman to be killed in the war in Afghanistan. Head was 29, and hailed from West Yorkshire. She was killed while diffusing a roadside bomb.

I had an abundance of strangers and friends ask me in complete shock and disbelief over WHY I would ever want to join the military, when I had told them that that’s what I was doing with my life.
