Wisconsin attorney general candidate says fast food workers should get a “real job”

Brad Schimel, the Republican candidate for Attorney General in Wisconsin, is just sick and tired of debating about the mininum wage. He told supporters at a Milwaukee County Republicans party:

“I want every one of our neighbors to have a job again, a well-paid job, so we don’t have to argue about minimum wage for someone working at Burger King. Let’s get them a real job.”

Walking all over Wisconsin women: The alarming silence around Scott Walker’s secret emails

The flood of emails released last week, linking Wisconsin governor Scott Walker to a secret email system that was used to avoid public scrutiny during his days as Milwaukee County Executive, yielded something that should surprise no one. The soon-to-be governor was directly responsible for the firing of a competent woman doctor for no reason other than her history as a “thong model.”

The email shown at right (click to enlarge) shows Walker’s then-chief of staff, Thomas Nardelli, apprising Walker and Kelly Rindfleisch (who was later convicted of campaign finance abuses) of the unnamed doctor and the desire to get rid of her “without much fanfare.” There is no indication that anything other than her “checkered past” as ...

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signs the latest restrictive abortion bill

On Friday, while most of us were probably still trying to recuperate from our 4th of July food comas, Scott Walker, Governor of Wisconsin, was busy restricting abortion access for women of Wisconsin. Walker signed a bill forcing women to undergo ultrasounds before receiving abortions, because we all know how medically necessary it is to remind people seeking abortions that they’re pregnant before they decide to end a pregnancy. Supporters of the bill are not shy about their intentions:

“…ultrasounds will help the woman bond with the fetus and convince her to save it.”

This logic imposes the narrative that people seeking abortions are not aware of the comprehensive nature of their circumstance, revealing that we still don’t trust them with ...

What went wrong in Wisconsin

Most people are surprised when I tell them that I was born and raised in Wisconsin until the inevitable regional language flap (I say “water bubbler,” you say “water fountain”). I’ve trained my tongue to conform to a more region-less lingo. But when asked, I’m clear about my origins.

I had admittedly been monitoring the recall for Governor Scott Walker peripherally for months. Dispatches from my little sister indicated that black Milwaukee votes were united against Scott Walker and by default, aligned with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Living in Brooklyn, my knowledge of Wisconsin politics has diminished to poor snatches of memory. I think I met Tom Barrett once, when he was my state senator, but hindsight is fuzzy. My ...

What the Wisconsin election results mean for the future of progressive activism

There’s no way around it: the results of yesterday’s election in Wisconsin suck. In case you haven’t heard, Republican Governor Scott Walker defeated Democratic Mayor Tom Barrett of Milwaukee with 53 percent of the vote in a recall election that put it all on the line. The recall vote was only able to take place through tons of hard work and grassroots organizing by Democrats after Walker’s despicable union busting legislation inspired thousands of protestors to take to the streets last year. You may remember some of the iconic images of workers and union supporters and others swarming the Wisconsin Capitol.

But what about actual labor organizers? How are they feeling about all of this?

I spoke to Michelle ...

Wisconsin’s Coercive and Web Cam Abortion Prevention Act

As we’ve noted before, Scott Walker joined the ranks of some of the countries most anti-choice leaders after signing the Coercive and Web Cam Abortion Prevention Act last month–a bill that restricts the ability for abortion providers to render non-surgical abortions. And a bill that managed to put “web cam” in the title. This bill went into action on Friday and as a result, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has had to halt all non-surgical abortions.

The law, which took effect on Friday, requires women visit a doctor at least three times before having a drug-induced abortion, forces physicians to determine whether women are being coerced into having an abortion and prohibits women and doctors from using web cams during the procedure.

The Coercive ...

Bomb planted at WI Planned Parenthood

“Pro-life” indeed. WTAQ in Wisconsin reports:

Grand Chute police are investigating an explosive device that blew up at Planned Parenthood. It happened about 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Planned Parenthood office at 3800 North Gillett Street.  The explosion started a  fire that quickly burned itself out. The fire and explosion caused a small amount of damage to the building.

Let’s call this what it is: domestic terrorism. Let’s call it what it is: part of a years-long, co-ordinated, national effort to make a legal procedure inaccessible by ensuring that all those who seek and provide it must risk their lives to do so. Let’s call this what it is: totally fucking horrifying and totally fucking unacceptable.
