Quick Hit: Texas judge blocks key parts of sonogram bill

Some good news: a judge in Texas ruled that parts of a sonogram bill that was slated to pass in Texas would actually be unconstitutional, specifically forcing physicians to show a woman the sonogram against her will.

via Reuters.

The law, which had been due to go into effect on Thursday, was a major part of Republican Governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry’s agenda in this year’s Texas legislative session.

But the judge, in a victory for abortion rights activists, ruled in a preliminary injunction that there was cause to believe such a requirement was an unconstitutional burden on doctors.

“The act compels physicians to advance an ideological agenda with which they may not agree, regardless of any medical necessity, and irrespective ...

Wasserman Schultz: “Stop playing politics with women’s lives.”

“I have never felt my right as a woman was more threatened than I do today,” said Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz at a Planned Parenthood rally yesterday who emphasized that she was 6 years old when Roe v. Wade was passed and we will not go back to that time. She also asked that Florida Gov. Rick Scott stop playing politics with women’s lives as he recently signed FOUR bills that would curb women’s access to abortion.

This last year has been some kind of conservative utopian sci-fi nightmare where “back then” is threatening to be “right now,” and rights we grew up taking for granted on a certain level are steadily being denied to ...

Shorter Steve King: “We are losing our ability to force women to give birth”

No, that’s not exactly what Representative Steve King said last night when he made the faulty statement that following the recommendations of the IOM to cover birth control in all new health insurance plans will bring the end of civilization, but he might as well have.

In his own words,

They’ve called it preventative medicine. Preventative medicine. Well if you applied that preventative medicine universally what you end up with is you’ve prevented a generation. Preventing babies from being born is not medicine. That’s not— that’s not constructive to our culture and our civilization. If we let our birth rate get down below replacement rate we’re a dying civilization.

Birth control and access to other types of family planning does not lead ...

What’s your debt ceiling got to do with me?

I just spent the last hour trying to piece together what I understand of the debate around the debt ceiling, as both an exaggerated crisis and the potential for a really big problem, to explain what it is and why we should care but then I got confused (and I even took economics as an undergrad) and the Feministing email thread ended up with a whole lotta “fuck republicans” and “this is all because the President is black.” I know, you would rather read that email thread, but here are a few links to help flesh out a debate that threatens a lot of what we know to be foundational to our country.

The imitable Melissa Harris-Perry guest hosted the Rachel ...

Kansas moves to be only state without one place to get an abortion

A Planned Parenthood in Kansas was denied state license to perform abortions based on new regulations that Senator Brownbeck has decided to implement. These new regulations, that include things like how many bathrooms there are in a facility, (surprise), only apply to abortion clinics. Not only are these new laws bizarre and obviously created to deny any woman in Kansas from having access to abortion, this also means there is no facility or doctor’s office in all of Kansas where a woman can obtain an abortion.

via Wichita Eagle,

Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri disclosed the denial by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in a lawsuit it filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan. Its ...

Navy to disallow on base same-sex weddings.

Due to pressure from Republican lawmakers the Navy is set to reverse it’s decision on allowing military chaplains to officiate same-sex marriages on navy bases.

via the Advocate.

In an April 13 memo on “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal training, Rear Adm. Mark L. Tidd, Chief of Navy Chaplains, clarified that base facilities are “sexual orientation neutral,” and that chaplains may perform marriages for gay couples “if it is conducted in accordance with the laws of a state which permits same-sex marriage[.]” Chaplains could elect to officiate should a ceremony be “consistent with the tenets of his or her religious organization.”

But Tidd reversed course late Tuesday, writing that his guidance is suspended pending “additional legal and policy review and inter-Departmental ...

Pat Robertson’s logic about abortion and women.

Pat Robertson is evergreen blog fodder, because when I am struggling with finding something to write about, I know I can count on him to have said something that will make us LOL and give us a taste of the profound ignorance that resides between his ears. According to a clip of him from the 700 Club, the reason that the left supports funding for Planned Parenthood is because of our “culture of death.” Our “culture of death” allows women to lesbians which puts women on a level playing field. Hey, I can’t make this shit up.

Breaking: Kansas “Mega Bill” Would Deny Non-Profit Status to Abortion Providers

Today may be “National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers,” but down in Kansas, they’ve decided to do anything but.

In fact, in a bill introduced yesterday in the Kansas state legislature, they’ve combined several familiar anti-choice gimmicks, including parental consent laws, fetal personhood measures, and more, to form what some are calling an anti abortion “mega-bill.”

The kicker? In addition to these more familiar anti-choice ploys, the bill makes an unprecedented attack on organizations that provide abortion services: by threatening their non-profit, or 501c3, status.

If this bill passes, any organization, such as a hospital, medical practice, or Planned Parenthood clinic, that has non profit status, will no longer be able to claim non profit status on their state taxes if they provide abortion services.

That’s right. The state of Kansas thinks ...
