Susan B. Anthony list to create training programs to help Republicans talk about rape

The only instruction that Republicans need about talking about rape these days is to…stop. Or, well, keep talking–so we can continue to learn about their curious and frightening logix about pregnancy, sex, consent, and magic uteri. I imagine Susan B. Anthony list’s training is going to be some form of–“doh, just stop talking about it!” But these fine men just can’t help themselves, because they actually believe what is coming out of their mouths.

via Politico.

Marina Ein, whose public relations firm does crisis communications, said the party needs some kind of “sensitivity training” for its candidates if it wants to do better in the next elections.

“It all boils down to whether or not the Republican Party thinks this is a ...

The morning-after pill is not an abortion pill

That’s just some outdated medical information that is repeated on practice, but has never been scientifically proven. According to investigation by the New York Times–the morning-after pill doesn’t stop the fertilized egg from implanting but instead slows down ovulation, before the egg is even fertilized.

It turns out that the politically charged debate over morning-after pills and abortion, an increasingly sensitive issue in this election year, is probably rooted in outdated or incorrect scientific guesses about how the pills work. Because they block creation of fertilized eggs, they would not meet abortion opponents’ definition of abortion-inducing drugs. In contrast, RU-486 is an abortion pill because it destroys implanted embryos, terminating pregnancies.

The implantation idea stems from the Food and Drug Administration’s decision during ...

That Awful Moment when the House implicitly endorses violence against women

House Republicans have stooped low in their all-out war on women by turning an issue that has never been bipartisan–that violence against women is a bad thing–into a partisan one voting 222-206 in support of a ridiculous, callous and watered down version of the Violence Against Women Act. As Vanessa noted Tuesday, it was slated to be voted on Wednesday with the hope that they wouldn’t pass the watered down version the House produced–but we should only be so hopeful.

This bill denies protection of undocumented immigrants, Native/indigenous people and LGBT victims of violence. Distinguishing these populations that are actually highly vulnerable and susceptible to violence is uniquely callous. What could motivate such thinking? Well, Amanda looked through the list ...

“In the good old days, men knew that women are crazy and they knew how to deal with them.”

File under: we can’t make this shit up.

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson believes that the worst thing to happen in modern society is that women were given the right to vote. Additional important information provided by this genius: Women are sluts (Limbaugh was right) and women are now out of control with power, so much power–vaginal power. (Because fighting for our right to abortion and contraception is showing exactly how much power we have!).

The answer is for us to find God. And clamp down on every right a woman has gained in the last 90 years.

I may not be religious, but I don’t know that God would claim this one.

Someone with these attitudes would never be given access to mainstream media platforms ...

North Carolina slated to pass same-sex marriage ban amendment

While the Obama administration continues to flip-flop on the question of same-sex marrage, North Carolina gives us good reminder why we are in desperate need of leaders that take a stand on supporting full rights same-sex couples. North Carolina is slated to vote on an amendment that would essentially ban same-sex marriage along with civil unions. North Carolina is the only state in the region that does not have an all out ban–but same-sex marriage is still illegal through statute. This law would merely make it even harder to repeal, banning marriage and denying certain rights including family protection, health insurance, etc.

And it looks like it is going to pass.

A survey of 1,026 likely Democratic and Republican primary voters showed ...

Texas judge allows Planned Parenthood to be part of state Women’s Health Program

Good news from Texas–a judge in Texas has stopped the state from banning Planned Parenthood from participating in the state’s Women’s Health Program. This means Planned Parenthood will continue to receive much needed state funding to provide health care services to low income women in Texas. The bill was pushed by Republican legislators that were responding to constituents that were so opposed to having Planned Parenthood involved they were open to shutting down the entire Women’s Health Program. Wow, assholes!

via AP,

Judge Lee Yeakel ruled that there is sufficient evidence that the state law is unconstitutional. He imposed an injunction against enforcing it until he can hear full arguments.

The law passed last year by the Republican-controlled Legislature forbids state agencies from providing funds to ...

Wisconsin’s Coercive and Web Cam Abortion Prevention Act

As we’ve noted before, Scott Walker joined the ranks of some of the countries most anti-choice leaders after signing the Coercive and Web Cam Abortion Prevention Act last month–a bill that restricts the ability for abortion providers to render non-surgical abortions. And a bill that managed to put “web cam” in the title. This bill went into action on Friday and as a result, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has had to halt all non-surgical abortions.

The law, which took effect on Friday, requires women visit a doctor at least three times before having a drug-induced abortion, forces physicians to determine whether women are being coerced into having an abortion and prohibits women and doctors from using web cams during the procedure.

The Coercive ...

Forthcoming HBO Special on Dr. Tiller

The brains behind True Blood has another show up his sleeve. Alan Ball, who’s the executive producer of many of my friends’ top DVR selection, is working on a new show called Witchita. The new drama will be based on Dr. Tiller,  who was, for many years the figurehead of political and cultural tensions.

Ball is teaming up with Devin Friedman, who wrote the the 2010 GQ article “Savior vs. Savior” about Dr. Tiller. Hearing that this series will be on mainstream(ish) TV made me both interested and wary.

Dr. Tiller, who was the medical director of the Women’s Health Care Services facility, was shot and killed by anti-choice activist Scott Roeder in 2009. He also survived an assassination attempt in 1993 and was a ...
