‘Chelsea Does Racism’ shows why talking about race is hard

It’s difficult to keep up with what Netflix puts out these days, but in case you missed it, Chelsea Handler stars in a new, four part docu-series called Chelsea Does, which follows her as she explores four topics: marriage, Silicon Valley, racism, and drugs. Each episode is made up of interviews, round table discussions, and Handler’s musings. The third episode is titled Chelsea Does Racism and, though Handler unsurprisingly steps  in it a few times, I actually think the most important element of the show is what it misses: the existence of systemic racism.

Flyover Politics

Last week, The Huffington Post decided to move their coverage of Trump from the Entertainment section back to Politics. Considering Trump’s “extreme and irresponsible messages,” Arianna Huffington wrote, the HuffPost is “no longer amused” by Trump’s campaign.

House of DVF and the power of white neutrality

Anyone who knows me well is aware of my love for high fashion. Even though I’ve come to accept that the “high” in high fashion stands for “the price is too high for my budget,” that hasn’t lessened my enthusiasm for experiencing the fashion world as best I can.

Some tips for white people who have opinions on Ferguson

For many activists, these past few weeks have been rough. From Thanksgiving to holiday get togethers, ’tis the season for hanging out with people of diverse political opinions. Inevitably, the topic of Ferguson, Eric Garner, and the ongoing protests against racist police violence comes up, and you may find yourself forced to explain institutionalized racism to a conservative relative.

“I need some white privilege”: In response to that potato salad Kickstarter

You may have heard about that guy who raised a ton of money for his potato salad. If you didn’t, well, there’s not much more to it than that — some dude made a Kickstarter campaign for a potato salad and it went viral, raising over $40,000 as of this writing. I guess it’s some big joke for people, but alongside all this is an important discussion about white privilege and internet fundraising.

“No one cares if you never apologize for your white male privilege.”

Here’s a story:

A 20-year-old college freshman wrote an essay for one of his college publications and was subsequently interviewed on Fox News, written about in the New York Times, and had the essay republished by TIME. Yet, he doesn’t understand why anyone thinks he benefits from white male privilege.

Honestly, that right there is all I have to say about Princeton student Tal Fortgang’s exercise in point-missing “Why I’ll Never Apologize for My White Male Privilege.”

Paula Deen thinks she’s oppressed like “that Black” gay NFL player

I thought the real life Olivia Pope was supposed to be handling America’s Paula Deen?

Apparently not, as this week the celebrity television chef, who has been plagued by lawsuits and first hand accounts of her calling employees the N word, is back to let America know that she knows just what it feels like to be to be the first openly gay player in professional football.

Deen, who admitted to using the N word and planning a wedding where she planned on having her staff dress up like slaves, saw her television show canceled and her long standing public popularity dry up.
