It’s on us to go beyond ‘It’s On Us’

“Identify situations in which sexual assault may occur.

If you see something, intervene in any way you can.

If something looks like a bad situation, it probably is.

Get someone to help if you see something.

Get in the way by creating a distraction.”

The White House’s flashy new bystander intervention campaign, It’s On Us, makes sexual assault sound a lot like a bad thunderstorm — unfortunate, inevitable, striking seemingly out of nowhere, and devoid of human agents. The solution, then, is easy and comfortable: “Identify situations in which [a-tornado-I-mean-sexual-assault] may occur” and guide your friend to safety; remember: “If something looks like a bad situation, it probably is.”

Gender-based violence is not like the weather. It has ...

Victory! White House task force unveils new recommendations to end campus sexual assault

If you read Feministing regularly you probably know about the work of Know Your IX and its ED ACT NOW campaign, which are fighting for Title IX enforcement to combat sexual violence on college campuses. Feministing’s own Alexandra, Wagatwe, and Suzanna are leaders in this campaign, and recently brought their demands all the way to the White House.

Last night, the new White House Task Force to Protect Students From Sexual Assault released its first report, announcing that it was adopting many of the policy ideas developed and demanded by these BAMFs, and making resources and data available at a new

President Obama gave the best economic speech of his presidency and you probably missed it

Yesterday, President Obama gave what will likely go down as one of the best speeches of his presidency and you probably missed it because you were out living life, working hard, and making magic happen. President Obama is finally on offense with regards to Obamacare, after months of the breathless, “The Web site is broken!” stories that dominated the headlines. His speech at the THE ARC in D.C. was focused on the problem of income inequality, which he called the “defining challenge of our time.”  The president focused on the message that every American should be able to work hard and get ahead. The Republicans normally attack this messaging as “class warfare” but given that the Obamacare website is ...

Are Republicans going to try to impeach Obama?

I’m surprised it took House Republicans three years to talk impeachment.  Certainly, when they won back the House, which is where the impeachment process begins, I imagined “impeachment” would become part of our collective lexicon again as the Republicans went after another Democratic president.

The loss of the White House in 2012, allowed House Republicans the freedom to beat the conspiracy drum yet again, with no fear of a general election backlash for overreach.  With the current news cycle overflowing with “scandals,” that wouldn’t even make Olivia Pope blink, we now have to pretend along with the mainstream media that the president is in some second term “curse” and that the GOP is charging up the road with Articles of Impeachment ...

Republican Congressman attacks Sasha and Malia Obama

First it was the NRA, and now it’s Republican Congressman Steve King’s (R-IA) turn to attack the Obama girls.  It all started when Breitbart.com bucked traditional protocol of never revealing the location of the First Daughters who spent their spring break in the Bahamas, for obvious security reasons.

I thought I made myself clear before when I said that Sasha and Malia Obama should be off limits.  Where are the responsible members of the GOP?  When something like this happens it shouldn’t only be liberals and feminist bloggers calling it out.  Republicans need to check their own folks, who don’t seem to have much sense not to attack two young women who are just enjoying their lives ...

Are Republicans already giving up on their electoral college rigging scheme?

After getting their butts kicked by Democrats in 2012, Republicans huddled up to strategize how to win in the next presidential election.  Did they make any real effort to reflect on their own policy platform and rhetoric that turns off large swaths of the electorate? No, of course not.

Instead, they set up a scheme to steal the next election by rigging the electoral college in 6 states.  So far, 4 states look likely to reject these shenanigans, Virginia, Ohio, Florida, and Michigan.  Two additional states, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are still debating the GOP’s plan.

Via Talking Points Memo:

Not only does the Virginia bill appear to be dead, the media frenzy surrounding it has forced top Republicans in other states to take a ...

Are there too many white men in the White House?

After The New York Times ran the above photo alongside the headline, “Obama’s Remade Inner Circle Has an All-Male Look, So Far,” the media jumped on the narrative that President Obama is surrounding himself with white guys to the dismay of the diverse coalition who elected him to office.

While it’s certainly true his first four cabinet appointments have been white guys, it’s not actually true that there are no women or people of color in the White House in senior staff positions. Over at theGrio, I argue that not only do we need more diversity in the White House, but it’s time for the entire beltway apparatus, which looks like the photo below, to get on the diversity bandwagon ...
