Walmart fires worker for becoming pregnant

For years, Walmart has taken heat–in the courts and the streets– for gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and a generally shitty record on worker rights. In the spring, the company made a half-assed attempt to be less awful by changing their policy to say pregnant workers may be eligible for a “reasonable accommodation” if they have “a temporary disability caused by pregnancy.”

But former Walmart employee Candis Riggins was fired–and lost her home–thanks to her pregnancy. After Riggins landed in the hospital multiple times because she worked in maintenance and had to carry around toxic chemicals all day, she asked to be temporarily moved behind the cash register–a reasonable accommodation if I’ve ever ...

Watch this video, dance to the beat & protest Black Friday

It comes as no surprise that Walmart, which made news recently for asking for donations for the workers they underpay, exploits their workers. But the creative way these Walmart employees responded is original, to say the least. And it will inspire you to boycott this corporation on Black Friday.

Photo of the Day: Walmart workers risk arrest

This afternoon, Walmart workers–along with some who have recently been fired in retaliation for speaking out for better working conditions–protested outside the company’s offices in Washington, DC.

Barbara Collins, a single mother who was recently fired after six years at the company known for its annoying smiley face unsafe working conditions, sexual harassment, excessive hours, and low pay, explained why they were risking arrest: “Enough is enough. We cannot wait any longer for Walmart to do what’s right for its workers and our families and all of our communities. If we are not reinstated and real changes to improve jobs are not made by Labor Day, we will be back to protest at Walmart stores across the country. This is just the ...

Washington D.C. tries to stop Wal-Mart from ruining its city

Wal-Mart’s plot for world domination  has hit a snag, as its plan to open six of its low-price, low-wage, high-exploitation retail stores in the nation’s capital is meeting resistance from local lawmakers.

The D.C. Council introduced a bill that would, according to The Washington Post, require  “retailers with corporate sales of $1 billion or more and operating in spaces 75,000 square feet or larger to pay their employees no less than $12.50 an hour. The city’s minimum wage is $8.25.” This obviously doesn’t fit Wal-Mart’s wildly successful business model of only paying their employees enough to be able to afford to shop at Wal-Mart.

It’s still possible the corporation will be able to get away with business as usual; Mayor Vincent ...

Stand with Walmart workers this Black Friday

“Because they don’t treat me like a human being.”

This Black Friday will be a special one for Walmart as employees from the store plan to strike on retail’s busiest day. Check this video out to find out why–and why we should support them.

Warning: Whatever you do, do NOT read the comments. I’m still kicking myself for it. Transcript here.

This strike follows a cluster of other Walmart strikes across the country over things like unsafe working conditions, sexual harassment, excessive hours, and low pay. Learn more after the jump.

Walmart claims discrimination too varied to be discrimination

Once again, women are suing Wal-Mart for discriminating against them based on their gender, seeking  “to end Wal-Mart’s discriminatory practices regarding the pay and promotion of female employees.”

Tuesday, Three women from Tennessee claimed they were denied training opportunities and were paid less than their male co-workers and are seeking class-action status for current and former female employees at stores in Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and Mississippi. One of the women suing, Bobbie Millner, accidentally received the paycheck of another worker who was male and earned thousands more a year, although he was less experienced.  A Wal-Mart manager explain the discrepancy by saying “men needed to earn more.”

In 2011, the Supreme Court rejected a class action suit ...

Supreme Court denies class action suit against Wal-Mart.

In a rather historic, but unfortunate, turn of events the Supreme Court has ruled that over 1.5 million women who are claiming they are paid less than men are not able to sue Wal-Mart as a class. The US appeals court had ruled that these women could sue as one group making this case the largest sex discrimination case in history.

via Bloomberg,

The justices said the lawyers pressing the case failed to point to a common corporate policy that led to gender discrimination against workers at thousands of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores across the country. The court ruled unanimously on some aspects of the case and divided on others.

The case was one of the most closely watched Supreme Court ...

Wal-mart gender discrimination case reaches Supreme Court today

Today, the Supreme Court will begin hearing oral arguments in Dukes vs. Wal-mart, the gender discrimination lawsuit against Wal-mart. At stake is whether the case can continue as a class-action suit–that is, whether the plaintiffs in the case can represent over a million more women who worked for the company since 1998.

At Slate, Richard Thompson Ford explains why this case is so important–and why class action suits are so vital to enforcing non-discrimination laws.

“Most of the women in the Dukes class action would never bring an individual lawsuit. Proving individual discrimination is hard. Even if the statistics prove that Wal-Mart discriminated against a lot of women, very few would be able ...
