Hard truths and no more lies: talking to boys about violence

This past weekend, I found out what a “THOT” is.

I was invited to speak at Union Baptist Church in Trenton, N.J., for a conference they held to address black youth and violence. Trenton is a city no larger than eight square miles, with a population of around 80,000, and has had more than 30 murders this year. Black children are dying and being exposed to violence at an alarming rate. I’m glad my friend, a youth minister at the church, recognized this and organized this conference.

Marissa Alexander

Instead of freedom, Marissa Alexander gets new trial date

Marissa Alexander, the black Florida mother who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot against her abusive husband, will get a new trial this spring. But her supporters were calling for the charges to be dropped altogether.

As we’ve previously covered, Alexander had a restraining order against her husband when he yelled, “Bitch, I will kill you!” and charged toward her during the incident in 2010. She fired a single shot into the ceiling, and no one was hurt. The sentence Alexander received would seem absurdly harsh in general, but especially since we’re talking about Florida here, where the right to “stand your ground” apparently applies to aggressors ...

Read this interview on the murder of Dora Özer

On Friday, sex workers in 36 cities protested violence and fatal stigma, demanding full, international decriminalization of their trade. The demonstrations were directly inspired by the recent murders of Dora Özer and Petite Jasmine, sex workers in Turkey and Sweden, respectively. The two deaths were recognized both as tragedies in their own right and reminders of similar violence against sex workers that doesn’t make headlines.

Today, Caty Simon of Tits and Sass published an interview with the chair of the Red Umbrella Sexual Health and Human Rights Association, Kemal Iffetsiz Asyu Ayrikotu, on the particular context of the murder of Özer, who was trans. The full interview is worth a read, but I was particularly ...

Defining violence, contextualizing military sexual trauma

Which forms of violence are the U.S. military willing to recognize? An Air Force veteran and survivor of military sexual trauma (MST) has raised the question in an interview with USA Today.  Twenty years ago, an airman raped recent enlistee Lisa Wilken in her dorm room. When she reported the assault, though, military prosecutors discouraged her from pursuing a case against her assailant because, as they said, the attack hadn’t been “violent enough.”

Restricting the definition of violence is a powerful weapon of the violent. Within an honest discussion of harm and coercion, the violence of sexual assault–regardless of the physical specifics–is indisputable. Yet the ability to declare authoritatively which forms of injury deserve the label allows the military ...

Waiting for a revolution: Tackling homophobia in Cuba and beyond

Ed note: This is a guest post by Kelly Castagnaro, Communications Director at the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR).

Only days before today, the International Day against Homophobia, a Russian man was beaten, mutilated, and murdered after revealing he was gay to two strangers.  His death reminded me of the many other deaths and injustices that occur on a daily basis, the harsh discrimination that people endure on the basis of who they choose to love, and the fact that homosexuality was only removed from the list of mental illnesses by the World Health Organization in 1990.  Most of all, the murder was a call to action, a reminder of the need to continue ...

Michelle Obama on gun violence, opportunity and possibility

If you thought you couldn’t love Michelle Obama more, listen to her choke back tears as she says important things about gun violence to an audience in Chicago.

Exhibit of awesomeness a) “Resources matter, what it takes to build strong successful young people isn’t genetics, pedigree or good luck — it’s opportunity.” and b) “I started with the same aptitude and intellectual capabilities as so many of my peers and the only thing that separated me from them were a few more advantages.”

The first lady talking about class and opportunity and it’s relationship to violence in low-income communities — never seen that one before.
