When black women die from street harassment

Who cries when black women die?

I’m not asking that as some type of rhetorical, poetic question, meant to move you toward ferocious finger snaps. I want to know. Who cries when black women die?

Further, who cries when black women are killed?

Mary Spears was killed. The man who killed her did so because she refused to give him her phone number. She told him “I have a man I can’t talk to you,” and yet he persisted. Rather than respect her wishes to be left alone, he shot her.

Are we listening to Syrian women?

In the ongoing crisis in Syria, we’ve rarely heard from mainstream media sources about how Syrian women have been experiencing this violence, and the ways that gender-based violence is impacting their lives in this time of crisis.

Women being deported back to life-threatening conditions in Latin America are fighting back

For months now, we have been hearing about the “immigrant crisis” that is causing thousands of women and children to flee the violence that is wracking parts of Central America (and that is rooted in U.S. interventions in Latin America). This crisis has increased human rights violations in the detention system and given the U.S. government the excuse to deny women and families the due process they deserve in seeking asylum. But these women and the civil rights groups and volunteers supporting them aren’t having it, and it seems that politicians just might be listening.

The T.I. and Floyd Mayweather fight for patriarchy at Fatburger

T.I. got into a fight. There’s absolutely nothing surprising about that as a news item.

T.I. got into a fight with boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Now, my interest is piqued.

T.I. got into a fight with boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. supposedly because Tiny, T.I.’s wife, posted pictures to Instagram after attending Mayweather’s most recent fight. In one photo, Tiny is posing with a group of women behind Mayweather, and in another she’s standing with his daughter. T.I. found the pictures disrespectful — and told Mayweather so. Mayweather’s response to T.I.: “Control your bitch.” Now I’m upset.

New Favorite Tumblr: When Women Refuse

Usually our “New Favorite Tumblr” feature highlights cats or sandwiches, but “When Women Refuse” is proof of online community media’s ability to bear far more weight than we give it credit. The new site, started by Deanna Zandt, catalogs “stories of violence inflicted on women who reject sexual advances.” The posts contextualize the Isla Vista shooting as a particularly gruesome instance of a widespread pattern rather than an inexplicable aberration.

A trigger warning feels redundant given the Tumblr’s mission, but take care of yourself if you read: both the stories and images are graphic. You can find a few more posts after the jump.

Art to inspire in the face of injustice: Claudia Silva Ferreira

Trigger warning: graphic police violence

On the morning of March 16th, Claudia Silva Ferreira left her house in Rio de Janeiro to buy bread. On her way, she was caught in a gun fight between drug traffickers and a pacifying police unit, who shot her. Claudia was placed in the back of a police vehicle to be taken to a nearby hospital, but on the way to the hospital, she fell out of the trunk. Caught on the car, her body dragged along the pavement for over two blocks. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Claudia was a poor black woman living in one of Brazil’s urban slums, known as favelas.

The police later tried to claim ...
