Trump to Appoint Anti-Feminist To Key Women’s Rights Position

Trump intends to nominate a woman named Penny Young Nance as ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues. As such, she’d be responsible for managing the State Department’s programs to fight gender-based violence and promote women and girls’ educational and economic achievement.

Here’s the problem: Penny Young Nance has made her career standing in the way of girls’ and women’s rights.

The Feministing Five: Sarah Deer

Professor Sarah Deer is one of the newest MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellows who were announced earlier this week. She is an incredible legal scholar and community advocate for Native women’s safety and health. Sarah is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma and teaches at William Mitchell College of Law in Minnesota.

Native American women living on reservations face one of the highest per capita rates of violent crime in the world, but are often left with horribly insufficient means of justice. Tribal courts are impeded by limited jurisdictional powers and authority, and lack of resources; and as such, it is very difficult to prosecute those who commit these horrible crimes.

Campus safety committee fails to recognize violence as violence

Last week, a 15-member committee of representatives from various groups related to campus sexual violence reached a consensus on a new set of rules that will take effect under the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (Campus SaVE Act). These rules are the new mandates that colleges will have to follow under the Clery Act as part of the Violence Against Women Act that was reauthorized after much unnecessary delay last year. The Clery Act requires schools to record and distribute statistics about violent crimes that happen on and near their campuses. Under the new approved set of rules, colleges will have to report and include in their annual crime statistics instances of domestic violence, ...

Virginia’s Ken Cuccinelli worked with group that thinks the VAWA encourages women to fake domestic abuse

Virginia’s Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli wants to be governor but throughout this process of running more and more information about his extreme views are being revealed. Before transvaginal ultrasounds were a household term, thanks to Cuccinelli and his buddy Bob McDonnell, he was a private attorney who was very active in the Father’s Rights movement. With regards to the Violence Against Women Act, these Father’s Rights groups have been called out for essentially operating as an organization that discriminates against women who are suffering at the hands of their abusive partners.

A National Organization for Women advisory committee on family law wrote last year that fathers’ rights groups’ “true objectives are to discriminate against, control and ...
