U.N. goes IN on the Vatican: Criticizes handling of sexual abuse cases, abortion, and contraception

The Vatican was the target of quite a scolding from a United Nations human rights committee.

According to the Associated Press, the Vatican “‘systematically’ adopted policies that allowed priests to rape and molest tens of thousands of children over decades, a U.N. human rights committee said Wednesday, urging the Holy See to open its files on pedophiles and bishops who concealed their crimes.”

Awesome of the Day: Colbert vs. “Radical feminist nun” Sister Simone Campbell

As nuns from the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) plan to meet with the Vatican today to discuss the ridiculous investigation targeting them for being too feminist and “politicized” (because the Vatican is not politicized at all), Sister Simone Campbell of NETWORK was on The Colbert Report last night in response to the Vatican’s claims — and brilliantly throws Colbert’s snark right back at him.

Pope Benedict welcomed in UK with bus message: “Ordain Women Now”

Now this is what I call some kick-ass activism.

We all know that Pope Benedict ain’t too much of a fan women priests. In fact, he’s ordered the excommunication of any women involved in being ordained as well as recently updated Vatican documents implying the ordination of women is just as grave a sin as child sex abuse. So ole’ Bendi can’t be too surprised to find The Catholic Women’s Ordination group took it upon themselves to give him a proper welcome when he’s in the UK next month — with bus posters calling for the ordination of women:
