Bishop revokes AZ hospital’s Catholic status over life-saving abortion

Here’s one biggie we missed last week: Remember the nun who was excommunicated earlier this year after approving the life-saving abortion for a critically sick patient? It looks like that wasn’t good enough to be make an example of, and Bishop Thomas Olmsted revoked St. Joseph’s Hospital Center of its Catholic status entirely because it “violated Catholic moral teaching”:

Linda Hunt, president of St. Joseph’s, said the woman was in imminent danger of dying unless the procedure was performed. “If we are presented with a situation in which a pregnancy threatens a woman’s life, our first priority is to save both patients,” meaning both the woman and the fetus, Hunt said. She added, ...

Palin’s all-white “Mama Grizzlies”

If you haven’t seen Sarah Palin’s latest shrewd attempt to reach out to women…well, here it is.

Transcript available at Shakesville.
The language is taken from a recent speech Palin gave at the Susan B. Anthony List – an anti-choice organization – where she tried (unsuccessfully) to paint herself as the “true” feminist. This ad is just another cynical move to appropriate feminism and feminist rhetoric; somehow Palin believes by shouting “yay women!” over and over again no one will notice that her policies are as anti-woman as they come.
The other telling part of this ad is that there only seems to be one kind of “mama grizzly” Palin is interested in wooing. Check out ...

Roman Polanski set free by Swiss authorities

Polanksi waves goodbye to his charges.
Fucking great.
After months of deliberation, the Swiss Ministry of Justice has announced today that Roman Polanski is “a free man” in Switzerland and will not be extradited to the U.S. to face his charges for drugging and raping a 13-year old girl.
According to AP, the ministry says the reason why the extradition was rejected is because Washington declined to give them confidential testimony by Roger Gunson, who was the Los Angeles attorney in charge of the original prosecution against Polanski. But who knows if giving that information would have really resulted in his extradition as I tend to agree with Melissa that Switzerland doesn’t seem ...

Constance McMillen: I was sent to a fake prom

There are just no words for this kind of wrong.

The Advocate interviewed Constance McMillen this week– the high school senior whose Mississippi school canceled prom because she wanted to bring her girlfriend — to discover that McMillen was sent to a “fake prom” this past weekend while the rest of her class had prom at a secret location organized by parents.

When Constance won her case in court, which decided that she couldn’t be barred from prom, the judge also didn’t force the school to hold prom because a parent-sponsored, private prom was already being organized (which Constance and her date were to be invited to). However, Constance wasn’t invited to the prom and ...

Quick Hit: Lilith Fair drops CPCs and NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina from charity contest

As an update to Jos’ post earlier this week about Lilith Fair including three crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) as potential grant recipients in their charity contest, we find that all three CPCs were dropped from the list. NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina, however, was dropped as well:

This morning, four days after releasing a list of local charities–including several crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) and maternity homes–as potential recipients of grant money from the Lilith music festival tour, organizers today dropped the CPCs from the Lilith Tour Choose Your Charity Contest. Also dropped, however, was NARAL Pro Choice North Carolina in Raleigh, NC. However the Feminist Women’s Health Center in Atlanta, GA, which provides women’s health services including but not limited ...

Scott Roeder Sentenced to Life in Prison, No Parole for 50 Years

Yesterday, Scott Roeder — the anti-choice extremist who assassinated abortion provider and reproductive rights leader Dr. George Tiller last year — was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole for 50 years.
We’ve been waiting for the last year to hear this sentencing after the shock, devastation and fury over Dr. Tiller’s murder swept over the reproductive rights and justice movement. And now Roeder has finally been brought to justice, although he couldn’t go down without some self-martyrdom:

During the trial Roeder made lurid threats that God “will avenge every drop of innocent blood, ” and that God’s judgment against the US would “sweep over this land like a prairie wind.”
The judge opted to sentence ...

Quick Hit Update: Utah miscarriage criminalization bill withdrawn

Whew. New York Times reports:

A sweeping anti-abortion statute in Utah that would have allowed up to life in prison for a woman whose fetus died from her intentional or reckless behavior was withdrawn by its sponsor on Thursday and will be revised to be narrower in scope.
The original bill, which was sent to Gov. Gary R. Herbert, a Republican, for his consideration — and set off a firestorm of anxiety and criticism from abortion rights and women’s advocacy groups around the country — now goes back to the Legislature, neither signed nor vetoed.
The sponsor, Representative Carl D. Wimmer, a Republican, said he had removed a key clause that would have allowed prosecution under Utah’s criminal homicide laws ...

CSW 2010: Why This U.S. Based Feminist Gives a Damn

This week marks the kickoff of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a 2-week, woman-focused conference that takes place annually at the United Nations (UN). Basically, this means that for the next two weeks, THE principal global policy-making body will be dedicating itself exclusively to the pursuit of gender equality and the advancement of women. Pretty exciting stuff, right?!?!?

*Cricket Chirp* *Cricket Chirp*

Wait….what? You’re not falling over in your chair with excitement about this event? Come to think of it, where’s the buzz around the domestic U.S. feminist blogosphere? Shouldn’t we all be as excited about this as we are about, say, Lady Gaga? Can’t help but pull a Hanson here and ask…”Where’s the ...
