Private detention corporations are profiting off of detaining migrant survivors of sexual violence

This week Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officially announced its plans to open a new family detention center in Dilley, Texas, to house mostly women and children. This will be the fourth “residential center” in the country after facilities in Artesia, New Mexico and Karnes City, Texas were opened in response to the recent influx of unaccompanied child migrants, joining a long-standing family facility in Leesport, Pennsylvania . If the existing facilities teach us anything about the way women migrants and asylum seekers are treated in this country, Dilley will be a money-making machine for the private prison industry and a hot bed of human rights violations.

Women being deported back to life-threatening conditions in Latin America are fighting back

For months now, we have been hearing about the “immigrant crisis” that is causing thousands of women and children to flee the violence that is wracking parts of Central America (and that is rooted in U.S. interventions in Latin America). This crisis has increased human rights violations in the detention system and given the U.S. government the excuse to deny women and families the due process they deserve in seeking asylum. But these women and the civil rights groups and volunteers supporting them aren’t having it, and it seems that politicians just might be listening.

Anti-immigrant protesters in Murrieta rely on sexist & racist stereotypes

In response to the increasing influx of migrants crossing the border into the U.S., a group of protestors blocked three buses filled with migrant women and children from entering the local Murrieta Border Patrol facility. The protests have continued for weeks, and the buses – which came to Murrieta in order to relieve overcrowded facilities in south Texas – are now being rerouted to San Ysidro.

These anti-immigrant protestors are using some of the oldest – and worst – stereotypes in the white supremacist, misogynistic handbook to attack people who even the UN has recognized as refugees fleeing violence. The chants and signs coming out of Murrieta range from sexist to xenophobic to violent.

Last week I wrote about the fact that in spite of racking up $20,000 worth of damages by egging a neighbor’s house, Justin Bieber is in no real danger of being deported. Not because the crime doesn’t merit it (that’s not a judgement I’m interested in) but because he’s white, rich, and famous.

Thousands march nationwide for fair immigration reform

This Saturday, 50,000 immigrants and allies in 40 cities participated in the National Day for Immigrant Dignity and Respect. I attended the event in San Francisco and was so moved to see myself surrounded by not only Spanish speakers, but also Indonesian immigrants, Chinese students, and pods of men in yarmulkes and turbans dotting the crowd. Immigration is not only a Latin@ issue, and it’s not only an issue for immigrants. Everyone has a vested interest in creating an immigration system that works for our country and for the people who live in it.
