“I love my boo”

Last night on my home, I was delighted to see this ad on the subway. It’s a part of a campaign, launched yesterday by the NYC non-profit Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC). With messages like, “we’re proud of who we are and how we love” and “safer sex is one way we show our love,” the “I Love My Boo” campaign aims to raise the visibility of black and Latino gay men, especially those in relationships, and to address the homophobia that makes gay men more vulnerable to HIV infection. The ads will be appearing in 1000 subway cars and on 150 subway platforms in NYC this month.

According to the GMHC:

Today is World Teachers’ Day

It was Ms. Jinga, my 11th grade English teacher, who first explained to me why the term “motherfucker” was so sexist. “Because fucking a mother would be gross, right? Mothers aren’t sexy!” she exclaimed, loud enough for the class next door to wonder what the hell was going on in our classroom. She paced around the room with her long curly blonde hair flying around her head. “And because fucking a mother would be an insult to her son! That’s why we think it’s so bad to call someone a motherfucker!”

We were fifteen. Our parents, not to mention the principal, would have been horrified if they’d know what Ms. Jinga was teaching us. But she didn’t seem to care. And ...

Fighting back against the early sexualization of girls

Check out the awesome Ileana Jimenez and the incredibly wise student, Yanique Richards, in this video. It’s all leading up to the SPARK (Sexualization Protest: Action, Resistance, Knowledge) Summit at Hunter College later this month. If you’re in the area, don’t miss out, and if you’re not in the area, never fear; these folks are starting a movement. Our very own Samhita, Perez, and Chloe will be doing a workshop at the summit on blogging for girls!

Austin-based Womanzine zings me in the lady heart

I don’t know how I slept on this publication for so long, but thank goodness I’ve woken the f up. Womanzine, put together by some Austin-based badasses, is chock-full of hilarious commentary, stunning, original visuals (photographs, comics, and drawings), and good old fashioned advice, like basic palm reading (who doesn’t need that?). Download their latest edition, “Body Parts,” for a guide to navigating the nastiness that is Chatroulette, called “How to lose a guy’s boner in 10 seconds,” and a fashion call-to-action that starts with “Newsflash: fat is not a feeling!” There’s even an original poem written collaboratively by idiots whom our very own Ann Friedman has had the misfortune of running into (hint: they like to make inane ...

A few resources for women writers

A few weeks ago, I posted about the plight of the woman writer.  I suggested that more grants to supplement the shrinking supply of book advances would really make an impact on the lives of many young women writers. Since then, I have done some digging and have come up with three resources that you should know about if you are a young woman writer who is looking for ways to get funding.

The National Endowment for the Arts: Creative Writing Fellowships – These are grants from the federal government that award 25,000 dollars to individuals who want to take the time out to write, research or simply advance their career. The specifics for the 2011-2012 grant cycle will ...

Men’s Lib

There is so much bubbling up in the media about men these days, from the “Death of Macho” back in the day to the Atlantic’s “End of Men” cover story, and now to the Newsweek piece published recently, “Men’s Lib.” The authors are surprisingly smart about the transition facing men:

Suggesting that men should stick to some musty script of masculinity only perpetuates the problem. For starters, it encourages them to confront new challenges the same way they dealt with earlier upheavals: by blaming women, retreating into the woods, or burying their anxieties beneath machismo. And it does nothing to help them succeed in school, secure sustainable jobs, or be better fathers in an economy that’s rapidly outgrowing ...

What We Missed

Choice USA has a great new ad on how senseless “fetal personhood” measures like Colorado’s Amendment 62 actually are. (Transcript after the jump.)

Autumn at Pam’s House Blend on what media stylebooks state about reporting on trans people.

Sociological Images on how women are underrepresented as news subjects in the media. And when they are? Stereotypes abound.

ColorLines on how to build LGBT and racial justice movements together.

More Gender Policing for Shiloh from Life & Style Magazine

After receiving some backlash (plus a response from Angelina Jolie herself) for gender policing celebrity child Shiloh Jolie-Pitts, it looks like Life & Style Magazine wanted to follow up for more attention by implying that Angelina Jolie is the one gender policing her child — to wear boy’s clothes.

And what is the proof behind Shiloh being manipulated? Her outfits are too well put together so she obviously doesn’t dress herself  (you know, like most 4-year olds do). After all, Jolie must be the only person in the world who dresses her child herself — and certainly the only one to possibly dress her kid in clothes she may not like (although Jolie’s ...
