Update: TSA screener who wrote Jill Filipovic note about her vibrator suspended

On Tuesday, Lori blogged about Jill over at Feministe getting a note from TSA after they found her vibrator during their search of her luggage.

The TSA agent who wrote the note has now been removed from performing further inspections. The TSA put out a statement on its blog saying that, “That individual was immediately removed from screening operations and appropriate disciplinary action has been initiated,” the agency said in a message posted on its blog. “The handwritten note was highly inappropriate and unprofessional, and TSA has zero tolerance for this type of behavior.”

The note, which said, “Get your freak on girl,” while amusing as Jill acknowledged is also very creepy and unprofessional. So it’s good ...

TSA encourages blogger to “get her freak on” after finding vibrator in bag

Yesterday it felt like the Internet exploded when friend and fellow feminist blogger Jill Filipovic Tweeted the following:

“Just unpacked my suitcase and found this note from TSA. Guess they discovered a “personal item” in my bag. Wow.”

The Tweet was accompanied by this picture depicting a handwritten note that read “Get your freak on girl”.

Jill is a blogger for Feministe and a longtime friend of Feministing. She wrote a post about the experience on her blog, calling the note a “total violation of privacy, wildly inappropriate and clearly not ok” but admitting that she did have a good laugh about it.

I too had something of an ambiguous reaction. It is pretty hilarious, but at the same ...

The TSA makes it dangerous to fly while trans

Flying while trans is an act of bravery. Transgender travelers are disproportionately targeted for questioning and pat-downs as a result of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) policies that lead to us being “outing” as trans. Outed in airports – big, crowded, public spaces. Yeah, it sucks.

The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) has been doing a great job focusing on how TSA policy can negatively impact transgender and gender non-conforming folks. The new body scanners that caused such a big public outcry have been especially dangerous for trans travelers, who have been targeted for questioning and invasive pat-downs because of perceived discrepancies between their body scan and gender presentation. The TSA recently released software upgrades so that ...

AK Rep Sharon Cissna refuses TSA pat-down of her mastectomy scars

All I can say is bad-ass. Alaska Representative Sharon Cissna refused to face a pat-down of her mastectomy scars during airport screening. She left the airport, rented a car and drove from Seattle to Juno Juneau instead. Her comments:

“So last night, as more and more TSA, airline, airport and police gathered, I became stronger in remembering to fight the submission to a physical hand exam. I repeatedly said that I would not allow the feeling-up and I would not use the transportation mode that required it.”

“For nearly fifty years I’ve fought for the rights of assault victims, population in which my wonderful Alaska sadly ranks number one, both for men and ...
