I Asked the Department of Education to Fight for Black Girls. They Ignored Me.

Walking down the hallway at school, an administrator stopped me in my tracks. I felt her eyes glare from the top of my head, past my torso and down my legs. She told me that my shorts were too short and that she didn’t want to see me wearing them ever again. I felt embarrassed and shaken, and for the rest of the day, I wondered if her impression of me had changed simply because of the shorts I was wearing.

Why Are We Still Debating Whether Trump Is Racist?

Defining things as racist is like that exercise swim instructors do, where they tell kids to swim to them but keep walking backwards so the goal is never actually reached. Except in this exercise, the American public is trying to agree on whether something is racist or not, and the swim instructor is the ever-receding standard for whichever horrid slur or xenophobic immigration policy can actually be labeled as such.

Drug Tests: Weapons Against the Marginalized

Last week, Pennsylvania Democratic state representative Kevin Haggerty proposed that people filing Protection from Abuse orders should be drug tested if they lack “substantive” evidence of abuse.

Yes, that does mean he thinks abuse victims should be drug tested in order to obtain protection from the state. Yes, that is as heinous as it sounds.

No, Sen. Collins, You Don’t Get To Cry Sexism After Destroying So Many Women’s Lives

This week, the Senate succeeded on partisan lines in passing a bill known widely as the “Republican Tax Scam,” a widely and unanimously decried piece of legislation that exploits the working class to expand the wealth of the top 5%, strips millions of people’s healthcare, and tanks the country’s economy while it’s at it, all at the service of the party’s wealthy donors.

J20 Trials Show the Trump Administration’s Crackdown on Dissent

This past week, the trials began for seven of the 230 defendants facing 70 years in prison for protesting Trump’s inauguration. The case has wide-reaching implications for activists, including feminists, and we all should pay attention.

Two Months After Trump Withdrew DACA, This Is Where the Program Stands

It’s been exactly two months since Trump rescinded the DACA program, which granted work permits  to hundreds of thousands of immigrants. Upon rescinding the program, Trump suggested it was up to Congress to come up with a legislative solution to DACA before March 5, 2018 (the date when the first work permits are set to expire and hundreds of people become eligible for deportation). Here’s where the program stands today and how you can join the fight to defend DACA.
