More than half of female doctors in Australia sexually harassed by patients

Quick Hit: DemocracyNow! on Chelsea Manning

If you don’t know DemocracyNow!, you should (and now you know). The radio and TV show, hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan González, consistently provides excellent news coverage of the most important, and often least reported stories, AND brings you the voices of great guests, AND provides transcripts of their shows, AND provides Spanish language translation of their shows.

On Friday, the show had a  segment entitled ” ‘Empowering, So Brave': Trans Activists Praise Chelsea Manning, Raise Fears over Prison Conditions.” Goodman talks to Lauren McNamara, a transgender activist and Manning online confidant as well as Chase Strangio, a staff lawyer at the ACLU and former Sylvia Rivera Law Project attorney. You can watch the entire ...

Transmilitary: meet the soldiers the military doesn’t want you to

It’s no wonder Chelsea Manning didn’t start transitioning while serving in the army. The institution make have gotten rid of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, but it makes no bones about its exclusion of transgender people. In language that reflects its archaic and out of touch policies, The Department of Defense  lists the following as disqualifications for serving in the military: “history of major abnormalities or defects of the genitalia, such as change of sex [and] hermaphroditism.” and “current or history of psychosexual conditions, including but not limited to transsexualism [and] transvestism.”

This, of course, does not mean there are not transgender people currently serving in the Military. But they serve in silence. Until now. A new documentary web ...

Quick Hit: Demanding the impossible

The Barnard Center for Research on Women recently released Impossibility Now, a video manifesto on critical trans politics made by the trans speaker, writer, law professor and organizer Dean Spade, with Basil Shadid. The video should be required watching for the entire world. We included this in last week’s Weekly Feminist Reader, but I wanted to make sure to specifically highlight it since it does such a great job of articulating complex concepts in a simple manner. Connecting everything from immigration, gender policing, ableism, racism, and sexism, the video critiques federal equality and assimilation efforts and asks us to look beyond what laws say and look at what laws actually do for us. Spade says,

We’re told that the ...

Quick Hit: 100 Amazing trans* Americans you should know

Ed. note: This is a guest post from Tobias Rodriguez. Tobias originally hails from Texas and now lives in New York where he works in social media at a reproductive health organization.

Last week, on the International Trans Day of Visibility, We Happy Trans and This is HOW honored 100 trans* Americans. The launch event was also cosponsored by Chicago House and GLAAD.

According to Buzzfeed, “the Trans 100 represents an effort — which will hopefully be reflected across the LGBT community — to break down implicit (and explicit) transphobia in media coverage by highlighting the diversity of trans Americans.”

Some well known trans activists were included, such as Kate Bornstein, Harper Jean Tobin, and Dr. Kortney Ryan ...

Hidden Barriers

As a result of my participation in the Vagina Monologues, I was approached by my university’s television station to participate in a documentary. To the best of my knowledge, it is the first documentary of its kind done by the university. It was called Hidden Barriers. The purpose of the documentary was to highlight the barriers that students encounter as they go through their academic studies. I agreed to volunteer because I was fairly certain that they didn’t have any other transgender people participating. In this, I was proven correct.

Among the people interviewed was our first black female Student Senate President, a little person who decided not to opt for a surgery that would make her taller, a ...
