This has been a big week for the LGBTQ community. The Supreme Court’s rulings on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8 were hallmark decisions that we’ll look to for years to come as pivotal moments in the movement for equal rights. And yet, as many of us that work for justice beyond equality know, there is so much more to be done.

On trans issues within feminism and strengthening the movement’s gender analysis

I’ve taken some time away from blogging while I’ve been in grad school, and it’s given me an opportunity for some perspective on the feminist blogosphere. I started working at Feministing in 2009 with a goal of centering trans issues within feminism. I think the oppression trans folks face, particularly the extreme marginalization and violence aimed at trans women in this misogynist culture, is exactly what feminism can exist to change. I understand feminism as a response to gendered oppression in a patriarchal context, where femininity is devalued. I see the worst of our gender hierarchy landing on the shoulders of folks who fail to meet the strict rules of the compulsory gender binary in a way that’s perceived as feminine. This ...

Quick Hit: 100 Amazing trans* Americans you should know

Last week, on the International Trans Day of Visibility, We Happy Trans and This is HOW honored 100 trans* Americans. The launch event was also cosponsored by Chicago House and GLAAD.

According to Buzzfeed, “the Trans 100 represents an effort — which will hopefully be reflected across the LGBT community — to break down implicit (and explicit) transphobia in media coverage by highlighting the diversity of trans Americans.”

Trans allyship within GLAAD

At the GLAAD media awards last week, and again this weekend on the Melissa Harris-Perry show, GLAAD announced that they are dropping their original acronym, the “Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation,” and becoming GLAAD, an LGBT media advocacy organization. In doing so, they hope to convey that the organization is evolving to become more trans* inclusive. Actually, trans people are still labeled as “disordered” in the DSM-V

On December 3, a lot of the internet, including this site, got very excited that the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), which is used by mental health professional and folks in related fields, no longer labeled trans people as “disordered.” This would be a great win to celebrate. The problem is, it’s not actually true.

It is true that Gender Identity Disorder, the main diagnosis put on trans folks, was changed to Gender Dysphoria. This is a big deal, and hopefully matches the goal of a lot of trans organizers in this struggle: to make sure trans folks can access the medical care we need without being labeled as disordered.
