Forthcoming HBO Special on Dr. Tiller

The brains behind True Blood has another show up his sleeve. Alan Ball, who’s the executive producer of many of my friends’ top DVR selection, is working on a new show called Witchita. The new drama will be based on Dr. Tiller,  who was, for many years the figurehead of political and cultural tensions.

Ball is teaming up with Devin Friedman, who wrote the the 2010 GQ article “Savior vs. Savior” about Dr. Tiller. Hearing that this series will be on mainstream(ish) TV made me both interested and wary.

Dr. Tiller, who was the medical director of the Women’s Health Care Services facility, was shot and killed by anti-choice activist Scott Roeder in 2009. He also survived an assassination attempt in 1993 and was a ...

On the second anniversary of Dr. George Tiller’s assassination

Because today is the second anniversary of George Tiller’s assassination, it’s hard to not write about the anti-choice culture of violence that contributed to his death. It’s hard to not write about the forces that continue to threaten other critical abortion providers like Dr. Leroy Carhart. Just last week, a man was arrested in Wisconsin while on his way to kill the doctors and staff at a local Planned Parenthood.

But today, folks aren’t focusing on the hatred that took George Tiller’s life, but on the life that inspired so many. RH Reality Check has a great blog series up today of folks talking about Tiller. Here I thought I’d feature ...

FBI file shows history of threats against Dr. Tiller

The Associated Press has received 287 pages of documents from the FBI file about threats to Dr. Tiller’s life after making a Freedom of Information Act request. The documents are heavily redacted and about half the pages in the file remain secret. But they show a decade of harassment and death threats that led to Dr. Tiller’s murder in 2009. Some of the documents may speak to communication between Shelley Shannon, who shot Dr. Tiller in both arms in 1993, and another potential assassin. The documents are full of threats to Dr. Tiller’s life coming from a number of mentally unstable individuals.

I imagine most folks in the reproductive health, rights and justice communities reacted to these documents the same ...

On “The Assassination of Dr. Tiller”

It’s hard to say much about last night’s documentary because I think it largely spoke for itself. (For anyone who missed it, you can watch it online at The Rachel Maddow Show website.) But I do have to say a few things about why this documentary is so damn important.

First off, for Rachel Maddow to use her editorial power on a major cable news channel to address such a contentious issue as this in such a way — well, it’s just ground-breaking. When we talk about abortion on television, it’s either referring to some fictional television character that opts out of the abortion last-minute, or political pundits loudly debating about this word that loses its meaning. Because the ...
