Mounting Evidence that BirthorNot.com is an Anti-Choice Stunt

A Minnesota-based couple has jumped on the relying-on-Internet-voting-to-make-major-life-decisions-for-publicity bandwagon. Greg and Alisha Arnold created the website birthornot.com to have others help them decide whether they should give birth to their now 17-week-old fetus, or to have an abortion. The polls close on December 7, giving her two days to have an abortion, if they decide to, before she reaches 20 weeks and cannot have an abortion.

Gawker has spoken with the couple and they claim they are not conducting a crazy pro-life (anti-choice) stunt because Alisha supports a woman’s right to choose. But evidence against that point is mounting. At face value the ultrasounds and pictures on the site are a suspiciously common visual used by anti-choice advocates. It ...

Following up on Sydney Uni’s ‘pro-rape’ Facebook group

Last November I wrote about  a “pro-rape and anti-consent” Facebook group that was created by some members of St. Paul’s College, an all-boys residential college at the University of Sydney. When the existence group, which was called “Define Statutory,” received press attention, rape culture at Australian universities generally and at residential colleges more specifically came under scrutiny. Here’s what I wrote at the time about my experience of the atmosphere in which some of the boys who live in those colleges come of age:

The young men I knew who ended up at St. Paul’s and at colleges like it had graduated from Sydney’s best and most expensive private boys’ high schools. In my interactions with them – ...

Win for Women’s Health: New Gel Significantly Cuts Risk of HIV and Herpes Transmission!

In a huge win for women’s health, a new study published today found that a gel applied by women before and after sex slashed the chance of acquiring the AIDS virus by 39% and the genital herpes virus by 51%.

From Akimbo, the blog of the International Women’s Health Coalition:

The Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) has announced that a microbicide it has been testing has shown to be 39% effective in prevention the transmission of HIV to female receptive partners. The microbicide gel contains the drug tenofovir, an antiretroviral drug used widely in the treatment of HIV, and is designed to be used vaginally both before and after penile-vaginal penetration.

Woh. This is ...

How to win black “friends” and influence people on the internet

When I met Anna (Feministing’s awesome community moderator) in person for the first time, she recognized me right away — because, she confessed, “I creeped you on Facebook.”

I love this turn of phrase. “Stalk” has long been the verb of choice to describe the type of checking-people-out-online that we all do. I’ve always hated it (though I’m guilty of using it, too) because it conflates a relatively harmless, almost routine behavior with an abusive, controlling, threatening invasion of privacy. So, thanks to Anna, I have a better way to describe my low-level web voyeurism. I don’t stalk, I creep.

I thought about the difference between creeping and stalking when I saw this post — “Why I ...

Vaseline launches skin lightening Facebook application in India

Vaseline’s “Healthy White” Skin Lightening Cream

Skin lightening creams have been the rage in India for a while now. Even India Vogue’s attempt at embracing “color” diversity failed to show a woman with dark skin. Vaseline marketing on the growing trend of skin lightening has released an application that allows people to lighten their Facebook profile pictures.

Skincare group Vaseline has introduced a skin-lightening application for Facebook in India, enabling users to make their skin whiter in their profile pictures.

The download is designed to promote Vaseline’s range of skin-lightening creams for men, a huge and fast-growing market driven by fashion and a cultural preference for fairer skin.

The widget promises to “transform your face on Facebook with Vaseline ...
