“When does an Academic become a Whore?”

Spike Jonze and Her: Who are we writing out of the future?

Apparently, women aren’t equal when it comes to corporate crime.

Oh that’s me. That’s us, that’s us, that’s me, thank God, that’s us.”

Conservative SuperPAC interns make a fake sex tape with a panda and Hillary Clinton

FreedomWorks is an astroturf conservative tea party group financed in large part by the Koch Brothers and Big Tobacco.  Elements of the tea party may have started on the grassroots level, but that didn’t last for long when rich conservatives saw the movement as an opportunity to capitalize on the tea party’s energy.  Enter FreedomWorks.

The investigation into FreedomWorks management is ongoing but today’s report in Mother Jones contained this gem (emphasis mine):

An internal investigation of FreedomWorks—the prominent conservative advocacy group and super-PAC—has focused on president Matt Kibbe’s management of the organization, his use of its resources, and a controversial book deal he signed, according to former FreedomWorks officials who have met with the private lawyers conducting the ...

How to deal with a mansplainer starring Hillary Clinton in gifs

Sometimes you don’t realize how #bawse somebody is, until you make it into a gif.

So after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton smacked down the Senate and the House yesterday, it occurred to me that what made it magical is that it is an instructional video on how to deal with a mansplainer. And of course, any good tutorial needs to be broken down into gifs for emphasis.

Ladies and gentlemen, “How to deal with a mansplainer starring Hillary Clinton.”

Step 1: Raise your hands up like, “Whoa you guys you can’t be serious.”

Step 2: Make sure to emphasize your points by counting with your hands so that simple tea party Senator mansplainer understands.  Mansplainers like visuals.

Open thread: Tea Party debate

Last night in Tampa Florida was the CNN/Tea Party Express GOP Presidential debate, featuring Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Jon Huntsman.

Some highlights I’ve seen cropping up so far:

Michelle Bachmann went after Gov. Rick Perry for his support and implementation of a mandatory HPV vaccine in Texas, via Huffington Post.

The audience apparently cheered the idea of an uninsured person dying because of lack of access to health insurance (via TPM):

Blitzer asked if under Paul’s libertarian philosophy, a sick man without insurance should be allowed to die in the hospital rather than have the state pay his medical bills. Before Paul could answer that question, shouts of “yes!” and ...

Even Tea Party voters don’t want reproductive rights attacked

That’s right — in addition to the findings Samhita posted about yesterday on women’s lack of trust for Sarah Palin regarding women’s health, Planned Parenthood’s recent survey also revealed some really important facts about the public’s view on reproductive justice and health. Namely, even GOP and Tea Party voters do not want their reproductive rights impinged on. Some highlights, via RH Reality Check:

Seventy one (71) percent of voters are against cutting federal funding for preventive health services at Planned Parenthood health centers around the country (including 60 percent of voters who voted for the Republican candidate for Congress in 2010). Eighty-Eight (88) percent of voters support comprehensive sex education for teens which includes ...

Midterm Elections Post-Mortem

Are you sick to death of election coverage? Feeling defeated by major losses in the House? Annoyed with press conferences and pundits? Well, the media has a talent for giving us election fatigue but there is some good news and insightful analysis out there to prepare us for this arduous road to 2012.

Even as the Tea Party heavily pushed their discriminatory platforms, ethnic diversity didn’t take a total hit in these elections. As Lori reported earlier, despite the fact there will be no African-American senators for the next two years, Alabama elected their first Black congresswoman. In typical appropriating fashion, the GOP won big with their candidates of color, namely Indian-American Nikki Haley, South ...
