Photo of the Day: Activists warn prospective Columbia students about rape mishandling

Yesterday, the student activist group No Red Tape crashed an info session for prospective students at Columbia University to make sure those considering attending the school “know the truth about Columbia’s mishandling of sexual and dating violence and their new completely inadequate prevention education programming.”

The untouchable: Reporting rape as a trans survivor

Ed. note: This post was originally published on the Community site. *Trigger warning*

I am a survivor of campus rape, stalking, and an anti-trans hate attack. At this time last year, I was celebrating the end of my first semester at Temple University — not because of school itself, but because I’d lived in terror since my first full weekend there.

Let’s stop neglecting dating violence survivors

In the past few years, campus sexual assault has dominated headlines from The New York Times to USA Today, Rolling Stone to The Nation. Just last month, the White House released the It’s On Us anti-sexual assault campaign. All throughout, student activists have invoked the promise of Title IX to demand that their universities support sexual assault survivors and keep campuses safe, equitable, and just for all.

In all the buzz, though, there’s been little attention paid to other pervasive forms of gender-based violence also protected against under Title IX — including campus dating (or domestic) violence. ICYMI it’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so it seems as good a time ...

Photo of the Day: Indian students protest police brutality and sexual violence

Students at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India have been protesting for nearly a month now after a female student was sexually assaulted. Fellow students’ peaceful protest against the inaction of the university authorities and demands for an independent investigation were met with a brutal police crackdown that sent several students to the hospital. This past weekend, tens of thousands of people marched to protest the police violence. While the government has begun an inquiry into the assault, students are continuing their boycott until the school’s vice chancellor resigns.

Here are the 55 colleges under investigation for their handling of campus sexual assault

When the White House task force released their recommendations on combating campus rape earlier this week, they promised that the Department of Education would make the list of colleges facing Title IX investigations over their handling of sexual violence available upon request. Activists from Know Your IX noted that in the interest of true transparency, that list should be publicly accessible to all in order to better “allow the public to hold both schools and ED accountable.”

Now the Department of Education has released the names. Here are the 55 schools currently under investigation:

Title IX enforcement is getting better, but the Education Department needs to do more

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post by Dana Bolger and John Kelly. Dana is a student at Amherst College and founder of Know Your IX. John is a student at Tufts University. They are both organizers of ED ACT NOW. (And an editor’s disclaimer: I’m a member of ED ACT NOW.)

Last July, dozens of survivors, activists, and allies descended upon the Department of Education (ED) in Washington, D.C. to demand that the federal government take seriously the violence that has been perpetrated against college students and better enforce Title IX compliance on our campuses. (Title IX is the landmark federal legislation that protects victims ...
