South Dakota extends its already super long 72-hour waiting period before an abortion

Not content to have one of the longest mandatory waiting period laws in the country, South Dakota has now made it even worse.

South Dakota Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard on Friday signed into law a measure that excludes weekends and holidays from the state’s 72-hour waiting period for abortions, potentially making the wait the longest in the nation.

This means that in South Dakota–a state that has only one abortion clinic–you may be forced to wait up to six days if you try to get an abortion before a three-day weekend. The law originally would have required the patient to receive propaganda counseling at an anti-choice crisis pregnancy center too. South Dakota upholds suicide advisory for abortions

South Dakota–not exactly the state you want to get caught with an unwanted pregnancy–has spent the last few years making access to abortion the most taxing and violating experience ever. Last year a court found that giving women the false and unproven information that within 24 hours of an abortion she has a higher risk of suicide impedes on a doctors effectiveness to do their jobs. Doctors should generally tell us things that are medically proven. The relationship between mental distress and abortion has little to no evidence supporting it. So, it’s safe to conclude, giving medically false information to your patients makes your job difficult, if not impossible to do effectively.

Breaking: South Dakota shelves bill that would have allowed murder of abortion providers

It seems that pesky ole South Dakota law that would have legalized the murder of abortion providers– and pregnant women- has been taken off the table.

From the NY Times:

The House speaker, Val Rausch, said that the legislation had been shelved, pending a decision on whether to allow a vote, amend the language or drop it entirely. A spokesman for Gov. Dennis Daugaard said, “Clearly the bill as it’s currently written is a very bad idea.”
