Photo of the Day: #normalizebreastfeeding

When Karlesha Thurman, a 25-year-old mom and recent graduate of California State University Long Beach, posted the above image on the Facebook group page Black Women Do Breast Feed, a group dedicated to promoting awareness as well as remove the stigma of breastfeeding in black community, she wasn’t looking to stir up controversy.

If anything, it was a celebration and acknowledgement that her daughter was her inspiration for her finishing her degree. Thurman wrote in a separate Facebook note, “I found out I was pregnant my last year of college. She was my motivation to keep going, so me receiving my BA was OUR moment.” After publishing this snapshot from college graduation, Thurman was subject to some nasty comments ...

“Stop asking people’s clothing to have sex with you, and start asking people.”

As we well know, there are several things that women can do to avoid sexual assault. Get married, buy special anti-rape underwear, and, perhaps most commonly, wear more clothing. Because clearly someone’s clothing communicates everything you need to know about their willingness to have sex.

In this video, slam poet Anna Binkovitz imagines a dystopian world in which all our intentions were based only on our sartorial choices and makes a novel suggestion: “Stop asking people’s clothing to have sex with you, and start asking people.” An intriguing idea!

Utah high school photoshops female students’ yearbook photos to show less skin

Administrators at a Utah high school photoshopped the yearbook photos of many female students to show less skin. Phew! With all those exposed shoulders (gasp!) and clavicles (oh my!), the yearbook could have ended up looking like a goddamn Playboy!

Quote of the Day: “I’m not responsible for some perverted 45 year old dad lusting after me.”

Clare is a 17-year-old girl who was kicked out of her senior prom because some of the chaperones feared she was inspiring “impure thoughts” among the boys by swaying to the music in her regulation-length dress.

“Please, please tell me I’m not the only one who think it doesn’t matter how people are dressed or how they move their bodies, we should still treat them with respect and decency. And enough with the slut shaming. Please. Goddamn I’m not responsible for some perverted 45 year old dad lusting after me because I have a sparkly dress on and a big ass for a teenager. And if you think I am, then maybe you’re part of the problem.

Roundup: Monica Lewinsky and feminism

As someone who was only twelve in 1998, it’s been fascinating to read the reflections and retrospective analysis sparked by Monica Lewinsky’s re-emergence into the public sphere. In her new Vanity Fair article, Lewinsky reserves special blame for feminists who failed to show up for her. Here’s a roundup of pieces by feminists — some of whom were old enough to understand and be very affected by the scandal at the time — exploring what went down in the late ’90s and reflecting on what has — and hasn’t — changed in the 16 years since.

Illinois Republican says black GOP candidate is being pimped

The chair of the Montgomery County Republican Party, Jim Allen,  has shown his true colors in an internationally problematic rant about Erika Harold, former Miss America, Harvard law school graduate, and black GOP candidate running for Rep. Rodney Davis’ congressional seat.

Apparently Allen sent an email which included the following:

“The little queen touts her abstinence and she won the crown because she got bullied in school,,,boohoo..kids are cruel, life sucks and you move on..Now, miss queen is being used like a street walker and her pimps are the DEMOCRAT PARTY and RINO REPUBLICANS…These pimps want something they can’t get,,, the seat held by a conservative REPUBLICAN Rodney Davis and Nancy Pelosi can’t stand it..”

This is all kinds of fucked ...

Much Ado About Slut Shaming

I’m a nerd for both Shakespeare and Joss Whedon’s writing, so I’ve been super excited for Whedon’s adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, which opens this weekend in New York, LA, and San Francisco. I’m a big fan of the play, which is full of some of Shakespeare’s most hilarious banter. It’s also a fascinating play from a feminist perspective, because the story hinges on an act of slut shaming. Knowing Whedon’s interests, I expected this element of the story to be emphasized. I had the opportunity to see the movie about a month ago at the San Francisco International Film Festival, and I was not disappointed.

Much Ado is above all a blast, capturing the infectious joy that I find ...
