The new Anita Hill documentary and speaking in public as a woman

Perhaps what was so deeply gratifying about watching then outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s testimony before both the Senate and House Foreign Relations committees in January 2013, was her confident and authoritative voice as she fielded questions of asinine scrutiny over the Obama Administration’s response to the attacks in Benghazi in September of 2012. I watched her testimony live and marveled at her matter-of-fact tone, her command of the issues, budgetary constrictions, and policy, her unflappability, her righteous anger responding to a committee of men who respected yet condescended to her. My Twitter feed seemed to embrace #bawse Hillary too, and Zerlina was inspired to create this handy piece for posterity.

I thought about this moment as I ...

Teen superhero chases down flasher for two miles

Real-life girl superhero 16-year-old Jodie Schofield was walking home from school in Manchester, England the other day, when a middle-aged creep exposed himself to her. Enraged — particularly by the fact that the flasher was laughing about it — she took off after him.

New Anita Hill documentary premieres at Sundance

This week, Anita, a new film documenting the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Via EBONY.com, more than 20 years since the divisive confirmation hearings which made Anita Hill a household name. Right now is probably a good time to remind everyone that even though he was eventually confirmed, Anita Hill’s account of the sexual harassment she experience working under Thomas was corroborated by additional witnesses that the public likely never heard of.

New Indian ad turns the spotlight on leering men

I love this simple and effective video. Created by a film school in India to mark the one year anniversary of the Delhi gang rape that sparked international attention around rape culture in the country, the ad shows men leering at women in the street. The lyrics of the song say in Hindi, “Look how you look when you’re looking at me.” And as the men gradually realize when forced to look at their own gazes in the mirror,  the answer is: really effing creepy.

Quick Hit: “Am I actually any good at writing, or was he just supporting me because he was sexually interested in me?”

Science writer Hannah Waters, who is a friend of mine, has a brave and important piece up at LadyBits about her experience being sexually harassed by an editor.

Hannah is speaking out now because earlier this week another writer, Monica Byrne, accused the same person, Bora Zivkovic, editor of Scientific American’s blog network, of harassment. As friends and colleagues rally to defend the accused and ridicule the accuser (boy, these stories play out so predictably, don’t they?) Hannah wrote her piece to “let Monica know that she is not crazy, as people on Twitter are saying, and that she is not alone.”

It’s a great piece. Hannah skillfully conveys why harassment that’s subtle enough that you can second-guess your own experience of it can be so ...

Court rules unpaid intern can’t sue for sexual harassment

You can’t be serious!  A woman who was allegedly sexually harassed while working an unpaid internship cannot sue her harasser because she was unpaid.

Via ThinkProgress:

When unpaid interns encounter sexual harassment at work, federal law tells them tough luck. Some states and cities have expanded discrimination and harassment definitions to interns, but that does not include New York City, where a district court dismissed a sexual harassment claim from a former intern at Phoenix Satellite Television, Lihuan Wang. The reason she is not protected, the court said, was because she was not a compensated employee.

In January, Wang filed a complaint that two weeks into her internship in 2010, her supervisor had allegedly invited Wang to his hotel room, ...
