Hillary Clinton supports same-sex marriage

Duh. But awesome.

She’s right–America is at its best when we champion the freedom and dignity of every human being. It is not surprising but important and necessary that Democratic politicians continue to come out in support of same-sex marriage.

It’s going to take a global movement to ensure all people regardless of sexuality can live as who they are and be embraced. If you are interested in this, check out All Out and join the largest global movement fighting for LGBTQ rights.

Woman from Fox News’ accidental same-sex wedding picture speaks out

Yesterday the feminist internet collectively lol’d at Fox News when Jessica Valenti realized that the “wedding kiss” picture they’re using to accompany a piece about traditional gender roles is actually of a same sex couple.

Turns out, the two women whose love was mistakenly highlighted by the tirelessly homophobic news outlet are no strangers to the spotlight. Lela Mc Arthur and Stephanie Figarelle of Anchorage, Alaska won a contest last year to have their dream wedding in New York at the Empire State building, becoming the first same-sex couple to be married at the historic site (here’s a kickass video of them reciting their vows and defending their right to do so).  They are currently on their honeymoon (!) but Stephanie Fiagrelle gave us permission to ...

Obama to include same-sex couples in his immigration proposal

BuzzFeed is reporting that President Obama will include same-sex couples in the immigration reform proposal he will present today in Las Vegas. He is scheduled to deliver his speech, which you can watch live here, at 2:55.

According to BuzzFeed,

A Democratic source said: “Same-sex couples will be part of his proposal.” A second source confirmed that, unlike the Senate framework released Monday, same-sex bi-national couples — those with one American and one foreign partner — will be included in the White House principles.

Even when legally married under state law, LGBTQ American citizens are unable to confer citizenship on their spouses. Because foreign spouses are unable to receive green cards that heterosexual foreign spouses would be eligible for, LGBTQ bi-national couples are ...

Vote for strong families

Strong Families, an initiative to raise awareness and change policy around poverty as it impacts all of us, is running an election day campaign to increase voter turn-out. Using art and a nifty tool that allows you to upload a picture of yourself with a frame that says, “vote for us,” they are bringing attention to the reality that most of us are not living with a variety of taken for granted support structures in our lives, stating simply,

“From a lack of affordable childcare and afterschool programs, to immigration policy and marriage equality, the way we make policy and allocate resources needs to catch up to the way we live.”

The day to day wonk-o-palooza of the election can be draining and ...

NFL star stands-up against homophobia

Professional sports doesn’t always have a great reputation when it comes to homophobia, associated more with bullying and perpetuating limited ideas of masculinity. Football, in particular, is often known for the bravado of it’s fans and even studied for it’s relationship to domestic violence. Which is not to say that athletes and their fans are all a bunch of sexist pigs drenched with machismo, but that the culture of sports can often cater to a specific brand of masculinity. But, as Maya mentioned in the Weekly Feminist Reader, this culture is slowly shifting, the most recent example, powerful letter sent last week by Vikings punter Chris Kluwe.

He was responding to a Baltimore delegate that had sent an angry ...
