Vivian Boyack, age 91, and Alice “Nonie” Dubes, age 90, have been together for 72 years, and this weekend they tied the knot. As the reverend who performed the ceremony in Davenport, Iowa said, “This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago.” What does it take to sustain a relationship since circa the middle of World War II? A lot of love and work, according to Boyack. “We’ve had a good time,” Dubes says.

Pennsylvania becomes 19th state where same-sex marriage is now legal

Illinois celebrates marriage equality

 

Illinoians – this Washington, DC transplant included – are long at last able to celebrate the passage of a marriage equality law! Last night lawmakers approved the bill after (finally) getting enough House votes to move the bill through the Senate. Governor Pat Quinn intends to sign the bill into law to take effect June 1, 2014. This will make Illinois is the 15th state to allow same -sex marriages. I’m so jealous that I’m not home to celebrate with all of my queer Northside folks.

Hawaii on its way to becoming the 15th state with marriage equality

Last night the state’s Senate passed the bill and it’s headed to the House of Representatives today.

The 20-4 vote in favor of the bill, with three Democrats joining the state Senate’s lone Republican to oppose the measure, came two days after the start of a special session called by Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie to take up the legislation. One senator was absent for the vote.

If the bill is approved, as expected, by the state House of Representatives – where Democrats outnumber Republicans 44-7 – Hawaii would become the 15th vote to make it legal for gay and lesbian couples to wed.
