Santorum worries that female soldiers can’t hack it on the front lines because of all the “emotions”

Yesterday, the Pentagon announced plans to allow women into more front-line, combat jobs. The Service Women’s Action Network expressed disappointment that women will still be barred from serving as infantry, armor, and special operations forces, but said that the new rules were a big step in the right direction. As Adam Weinstein writes, “full gender equity in the ranks is no longer a question of ‘if’ but ‘when.'”

But enough of all the forward-thinking nonsense by people who know what they’re talking about! I know you’re all dying to hear what Rick Santorum thinks about all this. Via Politico:

I do have concerns about women in frontline combat. I think that can be a very compromising situation, where people ...

Santorum misses the days of back-alley abortions. Don’t you?

While at the American Heartland Forum in Columbia, Missouri, an efficient Rick Santorum killed two birds with one stone, pushing the myth of death panels and longing for the golden days of illegal abortions.

“fifty years ago… sixty years ago, people who did abortions were, you know, in the shadows, were people who people who were considered really bad doctors. Now, abortion is something to that is just accepted.”

Oh, what I wouldn’t do to bring back those shadows, to push abortion back into the underbelly of crime, shame, and death! Sadly I was too young to experience that pre-Roe v. Wade time but luckily, it’s captured by a report by The Guttmacher Institute, Lessons from Before Roe: Will Past be Prologue?

I ...

The “Obama’s a Muslim” claim and how to deal with it

Rick Santorum is true renaissance man. He is an equal-opportunity bigot, distributing his hate equitably among several disenfranchised groups, regardless of skin color, gender, sexual orientation, or other non-white dude classification. His tent is so big, he even made up a group of people called “blah people,” and committed to looking down on them, too. It comes as no surprise that Santorum includes Muslims in his rainbow coalition of disdain, advocating the profiling of Muslims, and claiming that equality comes from Judaism and Christianity but not from Islam. In Santorumese, calling someone Muslim is a bad thing. And, indeed, a woman at a Santorum town hall in Florida was using the word “Muslim” pejoratively when she said:

“[Obama] is ...

Santorum says states should be able to outlaw contraception, reminds us why he’s the worst

As Jos wrote yesterday, Rick Santorum placed a surprising second in Tuesday’s Iowa caucus. While Zerlina is confident Santorum will remain a joke, the media loves horse race journalism more than anything and the election’s a long way off. So now might be a good time for a reminder about how absurdly extreme the guy is.

And hey look at that! Here’s Santorum himself reiterating that he thinks states should have the right to ban contraception. Yep, it’s fucking 2012, everyone uses contraception, and Santorum will have you know that Griswold v. Connecticut–the 1965 Supreme Court case that we should all give a silent thanks for every time we buy condoms without being arrested–should ...

Romney finishes Iowa caucus three way on top, despite surging Santorum

The hot and heavy three way in Iowa between Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum lasted late into the night. The lead position went back and forth, but despite Santorum surging all over, Romney ultimately pulled out on top. A lack of caucus enthusiasm led to a tight sparring match between the three men. While Romney finished ahead of Santorum, he led by only 8 votes, 30,015 to 30,007. Paul cleaned up farther behind with 26,219 votes. The three way pulled away quickly from Gingrich and Perry. The latter, perhaps a sore loser, is returning to Texas to “assess” his campaign’s future. Michele Bachmann, unsurprisingly, was never really an active participant.

In some ways, Romney and Santorum ...

Rick Santorum strikes again, describes patriarchy in a nutshell

I’ve generally tried to steer clear of Rick Santorum’s brilliant thoughts since he converted me on gay marriage this summer, for fear that exposure to any more nuggets of Santorum genius would sink into my brain and revolutionize my worldview yet again.

But his latest wisdom is too revealing–and disturbing– to pass over.

Rich Wing Watch reports that while speaking with Family Research Council president Tony Perkins (oy), Rick Santorum argued that Republicans should work to lessen single motherhood in order to score political points against their Democratic rivals.

Why does he think reducing single motherhood would be would be such an effective strategy? Because it is the “single mothers who run a household” who ...

Thought leader Rick Santorum converts me on gay marriage

Leading social theorist, eloquent and diplomatic visionary, logician extraordinaire, king of the brown stuff, and official candidate for the GOP presidential nomination Rick Santorum has put forward such a convincing argument against same sex marriage that he has compelled me to change my previous position.

See, I used to think that gay marriage was a no-brainer. A simple matter of equality and anti-discrimination. A way to afford the same rights and protections to all married people, regardless of their sexual orientation (though obviously there’s much more to the LGBTQI agenda than gay marriage.)

Thankfully, that’s all behind me. I’ve seen the light thanks to Rick Santorum, who recently presented THE definitive case against same-sex ...
