Did Wendy Davis just hint at a run for Texas governor?

This would be the best news! On October 3rd, Texas State Senator Wendy Davis will announce her future plans.  The consensus is that she’s running for governor of Texas but until she officially announces we can only hope.

Her run against the sitting and forgetful Governor Rick Perry would be an epic battle of fundraising and outside cash is going to be key in how formidable Davis can be against Perry who has been in office for over a decade.

Certainly, Davis’ candidacy would fire up this website give folks outside of Texas a real opportunity to be excited about a statewide race in the traditionally red state.  If you would like to get Senator Davis’ announcement

Chilling new ‘Stand Your Ground’ PSA reenacts the night Trayvon was killed

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has a new ad opposing so-called ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws that exist in 26 states.  The ad reenacts the night that Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman.  But for Zimmerman’s actions, Trayvon would be alive and laws like ‘Stand Your Ground’ give people the right to shoot and kill someone with very few consequences by just asserting that they acted in self-defense.  Zimmerman didn’t use ‘Stand Your Ground’ in his defense at trial, but the law is the reason that Zimmerman was allowed to go home the night Trayvon was killed.

Watch the chilling ad below (transcript to come).

Missouri lawmaker sues to personally exempt his family from the contraception mandate

Missouri state Rep. Paul Wieland and his wife used to opt out coverage for contraception, sterilization, and abortion services in their state insurance plan. But under Obamacare, the plan is required to cover birth control and they can no longer do so. The Wiedlands have filed a lawsuit, saying their religious freedom is being violated and asking for a personal exemption to the contraceptive coverage mandate.

Rep. Wieland explains, “I see abortion-inducing drugs as intrinsically evil, and I cannot in good conscience preach one thing to my kids and then just go with the flow on our insurance. This is a moral conundrum for me. Do I just cancel the coverage and put my family at risk? I ...

Quote of the Day: “Whole women” need gas, not abortions

Just eight percent of House Republicans are women and there are only four female Republican senators. And apparently, the GOP is starting to realize that this is not a great look for them in 2013. (Not that the Democrats have anywhere close to gender parity in Congress either.) As the National Journal reports, they’ve launched Project GROW (Growing Republican Opportunities for Women) to help the party with its messaging to female voters and recruit more women candidates to run for Congress.

Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway warns that Republican women candidates should avoid being too…womanly. Don’t make an issue of your gender and don’t talk about reproductive rights all the time. She explains:

“There are very few Democratic women who can begin or ...

Are Republicans going to try to impeach Obama?

I’m surprised it took House Republicans three years to talk impeachment.  Certainly, when they won back the House, which is where the impeachment process begins, I imagined “impeachment” would become part of our collective lexicon again as the Republicans went after another Democratic president.

The loss of the White House in 2012, allowed House Republicans the freedom to beat the conspiracy drum yet again, with no fear of a general election backlash for overreach.  With the current news cycle overflowing with “scandals,” that wouldn’t even make Olivia Pope blink, we now have to pretend along with the mainstream media that the president is in some second term “curse” and that the GOP is charging up the road with Articles of Impeachment ...

Republican Congressman attacks Sasha and Malia Obama

First it was the NRA, and now it’s Republican Congressman Steve King’s (R-IA) turn to attack the Obama girls.  It all started when Breitbart.com bucked traditional protocol of never revealing the location of the First Daughters who spent their spring break in the Bahamas, for obvious security reasons.

I thought I made myself clear before when I said that Sasha and Malia Obama should be off limits.  Where are the responsible members of the GOP?  When something like this happens it shouldn’t only be liberals and feminist bloggers calling it out.  Republicans need to check their own folks, who don’t seem to have much sense not to attack two young women who are just enjoying their lives ...

Today is the 10th Anniversary of the Iraq War

Today marks 10 years since the U.S. began the invasion of Iraq.  We were lied into this war and countless innocent Iraqis and American troops lost their lives.  And even today, on the 10th anniversary, a wave of car bombs have killed 56 people in Iraq.

The Obama administration did successfully leave (except for contractors) as promised in the 2008 election and so now we look back on the war, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Via Think Progress:

Ten years after the first American bombs fell on Baghdad, the United States is still paying the costs for the invasion of Iraq — monetarily, strategically, psychologically and morally. The decision to launch the war is sure to be re-debatedad nauseum over ...

Surprise! Another Republican says something offensive about rape (and there’s something you can do about it)

What is it in the Republicans’ drinking water that makes it so hard for them to refrain from making offensive and ignorant comments about rape? And what is it that makes a party, which largely disavows science, think it can speak with any authority about anything related to science. Perhaps, we’ll never know.

What we do know is that the head of the California Republican Assembly, Celeste Greig,  joined the impressive ranks of Republicans saying inane shit about rape earlier this month when she suggested that pregnancies resulting from rape are rare:

“Granted, the percentage of pregnancies due to rape is small because it’s an act of violence, because the body is traumatized…. I don’t know what percentage of pregnancies are ...
